The Intelligencer is running a feature piece “The Most Important Senate Race Is Also the Most Ignored,” referencing the contest between incumbent Catherine Cortez Masto and the man whose own relatives call a carpetbagger and a phony, Adam Laxalt. Maybe that’s one reason Jimmy Kimmel decided to jump into the fray and do his bit. Good for him.

Pollsters have surveyed the race this fall less than any other top-tier contest, like the ones in GeorgiaPennsylvania, or Arizona. Neither the Democratic incumbent nor her Republican challenger has been the focus of splashy features, and both have significantly lower national profiles than their counterparts in other states. By the end of October, Google News revealed about half as many stories mentioning Catherine Cortez Masto as Georgia’s Raphael Warnock and one-tenth of Pennsylvania’s John Fetterman; the ratios comparing Adam Laxalt to Ohio’s JD Vance or Georgia’s Herschel Walker weren’t much better. […]

The contest, which is universally acknowledged as a dead heat, now appears better positioned than any other to tip control of the Senate, potentially determining not just the direction of Biden’s presidency but also setting the stage for the 2024 election. Alongside a similarly hard-fought governor’s race, it’s one reason why Las Vegas has been inundated with TV ad money — more than any other media market in the country, according to ad trackers. It’s why Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made sure to update Biden on the race on the tarmac outside Air Force One in New York last week. (He was caught on a hot mic being optimistic: “Picking up steam.”) And it’s why Biden himself ended a fundraiser for Nevada’s House delegation the night before with a last-second unrelated plea to the donors: “And by the way, while you’re doing this, reelect your senator. She’s first-rate. Thanks.”

I sure am glad that Kimmel came forward to do this. I didn’t know he was from Nevada. That must have been an impressive high school class, to have spawned a U.S. Senator and a TV talk show star.

Laxalt is ridiculous. He’s the Paul Gosar of Nevada, seriously. Gosar’s own family despises the man and testifies to the issue of his mental instability and Laxalt is in the same league.

I agree with the Intelligencer. I don’t know why this race hasn’t captured more interest nationally. I guess when you’ve got as many abject freaks on the GOP ballot in as many states as we see this election cycle, that’s what happens. The freaks get labeled A, B, and C list freaks. Laxalt is on the C list, because who can compete against A-lister Herschel Walker or B-lister J.D. Vance? It’s a crowded field, definitely.

I hope Kimmel’s endorsement sways a few votes. We need all the help we can get, “we” being Nevada, where I live, the U.S. Senate, the Democratic party and most of all, democracy itself. Our way of life doesn’t need any more corrosive influences in politics and that’s all Adam Laxalt would be.

  1. Although I live in the southern part of heaven, north cackalacky, I sent her money. Time for your readers to pony up cash. Put ur money where your collective mouths are. Typing & talk are cheap as they say. Every state that has close races need cash to offset all the billionaires that are hellbent to install an autocratic dictator. Then go vote the bastards back to hell. The democratic house has written 200 bills that gather dust on the turtle’s desk. All helpful to the average citizen. So the next time you hear it’s both sides & there’s gridlock…it’s pure bullshit. Donate! VOTE!

  2. Probably the main reason the race hasn’t earned more interest is because it’s Nevada. It’s a relatively minor state when it comes to electoral power with just 6 electoral votes compared to Georgia (with 16, but also because Georgia went to Biden–the first time a Democrat’s won the state since 1992), Ohio (with 17) and Pennsylvania (with 19). But, then too, the other 3 states have higher profiles simply due to the candidates involved. Aside from all three states’ having GOP candidates who have some level of “national celebrity,” you’ve also got the fact that, for the first time in its entire history, Georgia WILL have a Black Senator elected for a full term (that doesn’t guarantee service for the full term but it’s still going to be historic).

Neither of Nevada’s candidates really have that cachet to merit much national interest. Laxalt might have that family name, but Paul Laxalt wasn’t really that much of a major political player during his heyday. I do believe that Paul would be REALLY disappointed with his grandson. Considering the elder’s friendships with politicians on both sides of the aisle, I can’t see him being all that supportive of the way the GOP has developed in the past decade.

  3. Maybe I need to add another item to the GOP Vetting Checklist I put in a comment to another article here:
    * Such a worthless P.O.S. that most family members come out publicly to say so and endorse the Democratic opponent!”
