The lid is now flying off Pandora’s box in the wake of the Boebert/Omar showdown. What you will see in the days ahead is an open confrontation over the central issue here, which is this: Is racism and extremism acceptable in the GOP? Or, will the Republicans come forth and put principle over party and say, no, those things are wrong and they have no place in our party? Simply put, it’s a decision over whether Trumpism rules the party now, or if there is still enough of a conservative, sane sensibility left.

Most Republicans would rather put bamboo shoots under their fingernails than deal with this issue head on. But they may not have a choice. The immaturity and malice of their freshman congresswoman, Lauren Boebert, has forced the issue. There’s only one thing to be certain of at this point and that is that if Kevin McCarthy had a voodoo doll of Boebert, he’d be stabbing it with pins aplenty at this point. He doesn’t need this misery.

Here is the video of Boebert entertaining the troops with this very same material in September.

“Blackhearted” and “evil.” Those are condemnatory terms in anybody’s lexicon. I don’t see how McCarthy is going to wiggle out of this one. He’s pretty much up against the wall. Marjorie Taylor Greene may have been insipid and stupid with her holocaust references, but this is way beyond that. This is slander of the worst sort. Boebert is calling out the two Muslim women in the House, Omar and Rashida Tlaib, in the worst possible terms. And she’s doing it publicly. And what makes it complete slander is that she’s not offering any evidence of blackhearted or evil deeds that would justify the description. In doing so, she’s proving that she’s blackhearted and evil  herself by willfully disparaging the reputation of other congresswomen publicly, presumably for laughs and fundraising purposes, based on nothing but racist innuendo. Wink wink nudge nudge.

The next shoe to drop is going to be McCarthy’s response. He has to handle this by the end of the week, is my sense of it. It will be very very interesting to see what he decides to do. He is loathe to offend the base, but to remain silent and not deal with this only underscores his pathetic inability to function as a leader as every hour goes by. I’m not saying Paul Ryan or John Boehner would have had magic answers, I’m just saying that they would have done something already and not let this escalate out of control.

Meanwhile, Boebert has shown herself once again to be an ignorant buffoon and an agitator of the basest sort. Let’s see if she triples down on this now. Her cover is blown and she can “yeah but, look at what you said” all day and it’s not going to matter. She’s already said too much.

McCarthy can’t put the genie back in the bottle. And he can’t whitewash it. That leaves him with one option, which is disciplinary action. That’s the right thing to do, but the price tag is that it will upset the vaunted base.

So which is it Kevin, dance on the base’s strings, be their puppet, or do the right thing and be a leader? And here’s an even deeper question: Are you man enough to do the right thing or are you solely motivated by considerations of power, to the exclusion of all else? Your actions will speak for themselves.

  1. Isn’t it strange how it’s white x-tianity that is black-hearted and evil? Of course, my people have known this for almost 2,000 years. I am encouraged by the young people of today avoiding these people like the plague they are.
