I don’t know WHY I was blindsided, because Mitch is known for telling it like it is! Embarrassingly, I had forgotten about his opinions on Ukraine. Well, I just got reintroduced to it in a ‘bigly’ fashion. Wow. I think my hair got scorched! Mitch is a staunch supporter of Ukraine and always has been. Well, he let the administration have it! He may have stepped down as Majority Leader, but he hasn’t lost one bit of what gave him that position for so long.
From CNN: Former Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell sharply criticized the Trump administration’s Ukraine policy and pivot toward isolationism Thursday night, accusing President Donald Trump’s advisers of showing “their embarrassing naivete” in dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. McConnell, a staunch supporter of Ukraine who delivered remarks while being awarded the US-Ukraine Foundation’s highest honor, warned that “some of the president’s advisers” are urging Trump to pull back from supporting the war-torn nation, and argued that such a move would be a sign of “weakness.” Well, go Mitch! I hope it does some good. If we could just get one more person to wake up, it could start a wave.
I’ve been going nuts trying to figure out how to support Ukraine. I want to do my part, no matter how small it is. A bunch of small donations can add up! But apparently, Congress is pulling back and refusing to support Ukraine as we have for so long. Wimps! I guess that they do NOT realize the whole world is watching. Every time we do something stupid about this mess, like Putin saying he agreed to an air ceasefire and then breaks it less than an hour later, it should teach us something!!! But no.
Our country continues to isolate itself. Our allies are pulling back. Sooner than later, they’re going to simply pull away. And they won’t come back. Start with the USAID hell, then add in Agent Orange’s stupidity and government stupidity. It makes me so mad I want to cry angry tears. If we get him out of office, ha, and get someone decent as President, it’s going to take many, many years to court the countries who were our allies to come back. And they’re not going to come back all the way after all the US’s debacles. Trade wars, anyone?
But, back to Mitch. Here is some more. “This war is a reminder that what happens in one region has implications in another. That weakness in the face of one adversary would invite aggression from another even closer to home. That our credibility was not divisible,” McConnell said. “Allies half a world away in Asia have told us the same – that Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression matters to those who live in China’s shadow.” “America can’t afford to ignore these lessons. But that’s exactly what some of the president’s advisers are urging him to do.”
Last one. This is long.“When the president’s envoys trumpet the magnanimity of a thuggish autocrat, they do so under the watchful eyes of his friends in Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang. When his representatives in negotiations masquerade as neutral arbiters, or legitimize sham elections, or treat aggressor and victim as morally equivalent, they do so in full view of longtime partners across the globe – some who know the taste of aggression, and some who have good reason to fear its imminent arrival,” McConnell said.
“When American officials court the favor of an adversary at the expense of allies. When they mock our friends to impress an enemy. They reveal their embarrassing naivete.”The former GOP leader pointed to former President Ronald Reagan’s military buildup and the end of the Cold War, and specifically what he said is “the most popular phrase in Washington today: peace through strength.” “But too many of those who use it – particularly among the president’s advisers – don’t seem ready to summon the resources and national will it requires,” he argued. McConnell ended with a stark warning: “To cut off Ukraine is to stab ourselves in the back. So is the denigration of allies who have fought and died alongside us.” I don’t think I need to say any more. He is emphatically correct. We ignore this at our peril. Will it even reach the right ears?
*****And now, please read a very special request from our awesome boss******
Zoomers, if you can spare a donation, it will keep us trekking through cyberspace from planet to planet and psychotic news story to psychotic news story. We just need a little green energy to keep going on our (now) nine year mission, and who knows how long it will take to get rid of Trump? Thanks. Ursula

“Mitch is known for telling it like it is! ”
With rare exceptions Mitch tells it like it is only when he controls how it’s going to be.
I do agree with him about Ukraine. I’m not sure I agree with him about anything else.
Moscow Mitch is very much responsible for the continuing existence of Trump as president. His dereliction of morality and duty in the wake of Trump’s two impeachments has left our nation in the shit state it endures now. So he’s right about Ukraine: big deal. He can say whatever he wants now, but his power’s gone and nobody’s listening, certainly not any of the MAGAts he so encouraged within the decrepit GOP.
Okay, yes, Moscow Mitch has always been a raging problem for what he says and does. However, I had forgotten (how, I don’t know) about the impeachments. That’s a damn good example of Moscow Mitch. Therefore, what you said is absolutely correct. I still think people will listen to him – just not as many as I’d wish for. But he does support Ukraine. That’s important to me, and I will take anything that helps Ukraine, no matter how small.
Let us not forget the insurrection either, which was the 2nd impeachment.
Mitch was complicit in J6.
I fervently support the heroic Ukrainians, Susan, who are bleeding Putin’s army dry and have made themsleves the finest army in Europe, possibly in the world. They’re truly brave David humbling a bullying Goliath. And I too welcome any and all similar support from any source, even the disgraced McConnell. But his record is appalling on things that matter for our democracy, particularly his failure to rally what was left of the traditional GOP against Trump after 6 January. His conduct was unforgiveable.
That’s interesting! What I remembered is him blocking everything anyone tried to do. Hence, the tells it like it is. No, I don’t agree with him about ANYTHING else, but wow he came out, guns blazing, for Ukraine, and I didn’t expect him to do that. People are still going to listen to him.
“If we get him out of office, ha, and get someone decent as President, it’s going to take many, many years to court the countries who were our allies to come back. ”
The immediate heir is Vance. Else wait for 3 years 9 months. But, just maybe, 1 year 9 months will see a different landscape on the Hill. And then? Impeachment?
But between now and then……. GOTV
Dammit I had this whole long reply typed out and it got eaten. So I detest Vance. And I’m working to help GOTV.
If it’s more than a sentence or two, type it out on a word processor and then cut&paste. Many folks have had this happen, here and elsewhere. Don’t you just hate it when that happens?
Is he running again? If he is considering retiring, he’s much more free to tell Dementia Donnie to go.to hell.
