You have undoubtedly noticed the signs lately coming from the Trump campaign, showing that they either believe that there’s going to be a tremendous victory amongst POCs in the fall or that they want you to believe it. So far what we’ve actually seen is one gal, Michaelah Montgomery, who keeps showing up at Trump photo ops whenever he enters a diner or a fast food joint to do one of his Man Of The People schicks, and then there was the disastrous Black roundtable event which was staged to the barbershop owner’s undying regret. So the question remains, what do real Blacks think of Trump?

I would venture to guess that this guy is closer to the norm than Ben Carson or Tim Scott, if I had to wildly speculate. Here’s another Black voice. This isn’t getting as much air play as it should.

Again, the Era Of Trump has made it necessary for things to change fundamentally. He’s going to lie if he’s in front of either a microphone or a crowd. An unchecked lie will be accepted as truth. This is why fact checking in real time is so crucial.

This is as easy as it is. This is all that is needed. Why is it that networks that pay seven figure if not more salaries can’t achieve something this basic on a daily basis? There is a phrase we need to learn today, class, and that phrase is “gish gallop.” Heather Cox Richardson explains it, in the context of last Thursday’s debate:

“This was not a debate. It was Trump using a technique that actually has a formal name, the Gish gallop, although I suspect he comes by it naturally. It’s a rhetorical technique in which someone throws out a fast string of lies, non-sequiturs, and specious arguments, so many that it is impossible to fact-check or rebut them in the amount of time it took to say them. Trying to figure out how to respond makes the opponent look confused, because they don’t know where to start grappling with the flood that has just hit them.

“It is a form of gaslighting, and it is especially effective on someone with a stutter, as Biden has. It is similar to what Trump did to Biden during a debate in 2020. In that case, though, the lack of muting on the mics left Biden simply saying: “Will you shut up, man?” a comment that resonated with the audience. Giving Biden the enforced space to answer by killing the mic of the person not speaking tonight actually made the technique more effective.”

I wasn’t familiar with that term but it definitely described what happened Thursday night. Ironically, I had written that morning here at Bearing Drift:

“It is mind-boggling the sheer volume of untruths that come out of that man’s mouth. … This morning as I read more of the garbage coming from the Trump camp (I won’t repeat it here because we all are hit full in the face every day with a barrage of untruths unleashed like a fire hose) …

“I don’t really want to tune in tonight … I’m so over the Trump show … but this is about the future of our country and the world we will leave for our kids. Those are pretty strong incentives for me.”

Now we all know. And do not expect things to get any better in the next few months. Trump will be sentenced on July 11 and then four days later will be at the Republican National Convention. Expect plenty of lies.

  1. As a white member of a black family from the deep south, I think Trump knows as much about black people as he does about subatomic physics. I do wish the modern rap music addressed current political issues as the music of the Vietnam and Civil rights era did. Black youth don’t seem to know much more about their history than the young white folks do about history and government in general. They know they’re angry…but it’s a general, diffuse anger. The democrats need to focus on education of our young voters. They just see old white guys running for office.

    • I wish I could give you more likes for your on point insight.Education is the key and political rap would be listened to by the people who need to hear it.

    • And thanks to certain folkkks (looking right at Ron DeSantis for starters), it doesn’t look like young African-Americans–much less, young whites–will be getting any more information about their history for fear of “triggering’ certain ADULTS who would much prefer that young people remain as ignorant as possible about America’s less-than-seemly history.

  2. As an old white guy in Iowa, I don’t care what race, sex, or whatever a candidate is, as long as they will do their job!! MAGA cult members need not apply!

  3. Thanks to Ursula, I learned something new today: the “GISH GALLOP”. I’m 79, so I’m going to repeat it a few times to impress it more firmly in my memory (GISH GALLOP! GISH GALLOP! GISH GALLOP!)

I shared Ms. Richardson’s article on my Facebook “page”, and I’d love to share the video of Daniel Dale’s fact check of Von Schintzenpantz’s lies as well, but am not savvy enough to find a link.

I admire Rep. Clyburn’s restraint during his sit down with Dana Bash. Had that been me, I’d have probably “lost my sh*t” the way Joe Walsh did in his TikTok video, and given her a severe ass-chewing, at least until getting cut off.

  4. No matter how you slice it, every demographic of humans will have some smart people, some dumb people, and some in between. In my experience white people (and I am one) have more dumb people than most groups – and black people fewer ( and of those, in many cases, it’s not inborn but from lead in the water or toxins in the air or poor nutrition due to poverty while growing up.) I am not going to worry about black people voting for Trump**.
