Quite obviously, Donald Trump’s entire tenure in the Oval Office has been a tour de force toward ever-increasing executive fascist power, now all the way up through unleashing troops on American cities. And though Trump has not made the formal order yet, it sure appears to be only a matter of time until he adds Chicago to that list (He only goes into states with blue governors, no matter the amount of crime at issue, thereby setting aside existential questions about power among his own supporters). This morning, Trump posted a new meme about literally invading Chicago with an “Apocalypse Now” feel, saying that he “loves the smell of deportations in the morning” rather than “napalm” from the movie’s iconic scene. Herein, Trump promises to sic the new “war department” on an American city. Isn’t this fun?

It is deeply disturbing and also deeply racist and political. Donald Trump came up a New York City guy but is most definitely now a Florida MAGA man, nothing more. And he is perfectly capable and willing to make war on blue cities, particularly one often seen as “black” and certainly one that is seen as the home of Obama. There are many sinister layers to this post, and many have noticed.

 

The post below is put up for two reasons. First, to demonstrate that the adolescent MAGA-sect just cannot get enough of this stuff. It is always, always best to remind oneself that Trump’s approval remains exactly as it always has been, somewhere between 41%-45% approval according to the aggregate, and his people love it. Second, the post below is inserted to demonstrate that Trump isn’t necessarily talking about calling up National Guard troops. Note here that he says that he says Chicago is about to find out why he calls it “the war department” – meaning he may be calling in active duty troops to Chicago. And he wants “war,” evidently:

Yes, when one doesn’t “think” about where the country comes from and what actually made it great, all of this presidenting by meme is just “LMFAO” stuff, to be sure. Also, take note of that “cue” the “liberal meltdowns.” While it is certainly true that “triggering the libtards” doesn’t have the political punch that it once had, it is certainly still a factor in all things loved by MAGA.

But just as Nate Silver notes at the polling link, there has been a trickle of bad economic news of late, and the summer is over, vacations over, people settling back into “reality” of school, work, and trying to eat (with grocery prices remaining ever a concern), and Trump’s political capital remains at the mercy of economic news. Scenes of him partying all night in the “Rose Garden Club” will not look good as Americans struggle to afford even the most basic necessities.

So that was last night, and he woke up to somehow feeling a need to wage war on one of America’s greatest cities. Remember, this isn’t about supposed protests in L.A., nor even securing the “federal city” of Washington. This is – seemingly – about sending the real American military into a real American city, under no pretense of an “emergency” of any type. But be damned sure that he isn’t sending the military into Dallas or Miami. No, this is a power move over blue governors only. He will send the troops into Portland before he sends them into Houston.

As awful as it is, no one is “melting down” here. Just sad.
