You can file this safely under Things That Never Will Happen. George Santos having a moral awakening and deciding to do the right thing is about as plausible as Donald Trump waking up tomorrow with an epiphany of how badly he’s lived and deciding to confess all his sins and apologize to the world. Only in the realm of fantasy do these things exist.

Which then begs the question, “why does Ken Buck think that Santos is going to suddenly morph into another person?” We don’t know. News hit earlier today that Santos will not seek reelection in 2024 after the House Ethics Committee “released a scathing report that concluded there is “substantial evidence” the New York Republican “violated federal criminal laws,” including using campaign funds for personal purposes and filing false campaign reports. “I will continue on my mission to serve my constituents up until I am allowed. I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024 as my family deserves better than to be under the gun from the press all the time,” Santos said in a statement on the social media site X.” But Ken Buck thinks Santos is going to do something classy.

My take on this is two fold: 1. Buck is probably right that Santos was given the avenue to leave gracefully. But that’s a bit like giving a moose a pair of skis. The moose isn’t going to use them. It might be a nice gesture but it’s also a futile one. 2. Santos knows he’s on his way out. He knows that his chances of reelection, on these facts, are slim to none. But he’s still going to stay in office until the last minute of the last day — and then claim he was railroaded out of Congress by the Deep State and all that.

Just watch. That’s what will come to pass. Say what you will about Santos, he is memorable. We will go forward from this decade remembering Matt Gaetz, Marge Greene, Lauren Boebert, Madison Cawthorn, so many of them, but Santos stands in a class all his very own.

He blatantly stole from his campaign. He deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign but were in fact payments for his personal benefit. He reported fictitious loans to his political committees to induce donors and party committees to make further contributions to his campaign—and then diverted more campaign money to himself as purported ‘repayments’ of those fictitious loans,” the report continues.

Santos “used his connections to high-value donors and other political campaigns” to enrich himself, the report contends. “And he sustained all of this through a constant series of lies to his constituents, donors, and staff about his background and experience,” it says.

Let’s look on the bright side. At least we won’t have Santos on the scene for too much longer. That is cause for celebration. And indeed, if he did have any class, he would leave now. Anybody would, on these facts. But Santos won’t. Or, if he does, I will be utterly amazed. But who knows? He may get a call to work in a laboratory discovering a new element or have an opportunity to fly commercial jet liners, or perhaps even, resume studies on cosmic rays where Enrico Fermi left off. So, perhaps Buck is right. Maybe Santos will clean out his desk over the holiday and vanish. And good riddance.

  1. He can always go back to his other job as Pope, or President Of The World Bank, or owner of The Yankees, amongst many others.

    He has so many choices.

  2. “At least we won’t have Santos on the scene for too much longer.” January 3, 2025, when his replacement gets sworn in seems like an eternity from now. In fact it’s still greater than half his elected term. Agree that Santos will stay through the very last day. He hates his do-nothing thankless job but loves his $174,000 per year salary plus all paid expenses and health insurance. And no way do the Repubs vote to have him expelled with a 2/3rds vote from the House and lose a reliable secure extreme right wing GOP anti-American vote.

Santos (wanna-be the next Drumpf Dictator) illegally used his stolen “campaign contributions” and Kremlin/NRA bribes to purchase his Merritt Island Brevard County, FL Penthouse. He currently illegally lives in Florida while pretending to represent the citizens in his Long Island, NY house district.

Hoping he gets sentenced and imprisoned before his term ends so at least he serves some punishment before his greatest supporter Truumplethinskin the Coward gets a chance to pardon him & get this one man crime wave released. Hell, maybe both of these parasites will be in prison by the time 2025 rolls around!

I’m sorry. I don’t recall any of his “family” being “under the gun from the press” at any point during his entire time in Congress. I’m not really sure anyone knows who any of his “family” really is.

  4. Maybe Lady Luck will smile – and he gets his with a fine equal to his 4 years salary in addition to a spell inside a nice federal facility (or maybe a not so nice one)

  5. The real tragedy: House Republicans allowed this fiasco to go out of control. Republicans have no authentic love of country (fake patriots) and will stoop to immeasurable depths simply to grease their skids. Sadly, the fate of our country is growing ever more tentative.
