Promises, promises, that’s all we hear are promises, promises. It seems the NYT board has had enough and is saying so in no uncertain terms. It was savage. It was a succinct, scathing article that we would all love and wish we could write. Seriously! And holy cow, are they good at what they do. We can expect a lawsuit coming out of this, but there’s no standing for one. Up the creek in a stone boat with a paper paddle. From the New York Times via Raw Story:
When Donald Trump ran for president, he made a bold promise: “From the day I take the oath of office, we’ll rapidly drive prices down and make America affordable again. Prices will come down. You just watch. They’ll come down fast.” But 10 months into his presidency, prices have stubbornly remained high. On Friday, the New York Times had had enough. In a brutal column, the storied newspaper’s Editorial Board let fly.
We can already see where this is going, and it’s going to be ugly. Finally, an institution that can stand up to Trump and not even breathe hard has come to the fore. Trump may try to threaten them and try to sue them, but they’ll just brush that insect off their shoulder and go about their business. It seems that more people, as well as more companies, are over his nonsense.
This gives us 3 so far – Governor Newsom, Governor Pritzker, and now the NYT. If Trump were smart, he’d back off, but we all know he’s not even close to smart. He’ll come up with some hairbrained idea which will die a quiet death in no more than 48 hours, as soon as he has something new to whine about. Blah, blah, blah. *yawn*
Trump’s approach to economic challenges has been notably tone-deaf, the newspaper’s column stated. Earlier this year, he dismissively suggested Americans could handle tariffs by buying fewer toys. After recent Democratic electoral victories focused on affordability, Trump changed his tune entirely. He boldly claimed, “Every price is down,” despite clear evidence to the contrary. The White House even went so far as to declare that “inflation has been tamed” and “everyday prices are beginning to drop” – statements that are flatly untrue.
Even MAGA knows they’re untrue. It would be nice if gazillionaires had the same issues, but, well, we can’t have everything. His lies are becoming increasingly apparent. Why does he think he can keep going with the same exhausted lines (they’re beyond tired) is something for which there is no answer. Now, if MAGA would just rebel, the US might be able to do something about him. It doesn’t seem like they’re quite there yet. Wait til their rural hospitals close.
Goldman Sachs estimates that the share of tariff costs borne by consumers has dramatically increased from 22 percent in April to 55 percent in October, with projections suggesting this will rise to 67 percent by mid-next year. The Yale Budget Lab estimates that the current tariffs will cost the average U.S. household about $1,800 per year – a significant burden for many families already struggling with rising prices. “The truth is obvious to people who pay their own bills or shop for their own groceries,” the editors wrote.
Got that right. We do, and every check is a balancing act. Bet a bunch of you folks do, too. Trump refuses to see it from anyone. He thinks he is a great and powerful president. He can’t see what’s hidden in the shadows behind him. He can’t see his own deterioration. He sees a marble bathroom, a patio, and a ballroom, all in his image. His sycophants will only be able to cover him for so long. There will come a point where it won’t be possible to cover up for him. Will the country still be in one piece by then?
Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
