Holy Sunset Boulevard, Batman! Where have we heard all this before? Oh, yes. Billy Wilder penned a script about a has-been silent film star who was making a comeback. She didn’t have MAGA, she had a film script. And through a mishap, she thought Cecil B. DeMille wanted the script when all that was really going on was that one of his assistant directors wanted her car.

But on the idea of a comeback alone, Norma Desmond worked out rigorously, she trained for her glorious day in the sun. Similarly, we have Donald Trump showing up at the rallies, dancing, swearing, messing up the names of the GOPers he endorses. It’s not for them, it’s for him. He’s making a comeback.

Here’s Junior, broadcasting once again from high above Mt. Bake, to tell you all about it.

The message is clear, if you think you’re one of the “cool” post-Trump Republicans, fuggeddaboutit, curtains up, dim the lights, we’ve got nothing to hit but the heights, honey, everything’s coming up maaaguhhh.

In Ohio, tonight, it would appear to be that way. But if you just look at a few stats, Vance is not all that popular with Republicans. He ran in a crowded and severely divided field. He gained the plurality, but in no way did he come close to a majority of the votes.

Whether the Republicans he defeated will rally behind him, or hope to knife him, we are going to find out. Don’t look for the Cruz/Mandel axis to chill anytime soon.

And of course they’ve all provided Democrat Tim Ryan with lots of footage and ammunition.

It’s a long way to November, a lot can happen.

  1. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a push for a run-off requirement making its way to Ohio in the next few days.

Here in Alabama, you can come out of a primary race with 49% of the vote and still have to face the second-place recipient even if the primary has over a dozen candidates on the ballot (and that second-place guy only pulls in 10%–with third-place getting just 9% and the others splitting the other 32% of the vote). And we’ve had some candidates who’ve been bitter enough about not making the run-off, they’ve actually refused to endorse one of their earlier opponents (even suggesting their supporters just wait till the general election and write in their name rather than vote for a person they’d voted against in the primary; it doesn’t happen too often that the voters hold that kind of grudge till the general election).

    • Even if there were a push, it wouldn’t change anything for this election. It does sound kind of fun in a messy sort of way.
