Yesterday Donald Trump had the best evening he’s had in a long time. Better still from his viewpoint he knew he could kick back and enjoy it because U.S. news outlets are soooooo predictable. That it took a tragedy to give Trump the ‘break’ he’s so desperately wanted? Major media didn’t care any more than Trumpty did.
I’ll probably catch hell for writing this but here goes. Major news outlets have been bullied by Trump. If not into complete submission than substantially so. Is there anyone who doubts news bosses, top journalists and their legal departments don’t get DAILY threats from Trump? Especially over Epstein coverage? The Executive Suites and Boardrooms, as well as some of the “Talent” were as relieved as Trump yesterday when another mass shooter went on a spree – in Manhattan no less and gave them an excuse to NOT talk about Epstein.
Mass shootings are horrific. Tragedies. Does anyone think for one single second Trump cared about the victims and their families, or others who experienced the trauma of their own lives being threatened? Of course not. Neither did those who made the editorial decision to do what they so often do when a mass shooting happens – go to ‘wall-to-wall’ coverage of it. Repeating the same information (and questions/speculation) over and over for hour after hour. For the “Talent” that doesn’t get stuck with sitting at the anchor desk it’s the adult version of a ‘snow day.’ A chance to ‘play hooky’ and have some spur of the moment fun. And their consulting pundits love getting more camera time.
Getting back to Trump, for him it was hour after hour of HEAVEN. Ok, so he’s got some podcasters like Rogan out there still talking Epstein stuff but for the most part any criticism was drowned out! This wall-to-wall media “LOOK AT THIS!” crap is hardly new. Part of me wonders if lately Trump hasn’t wished for something exactly like what happened late yesterday afternoon knowing damn well how the media would treat it. Because they reacted exactly the way you’d expect and gave Trump what he wanted more than anything else in the world – them talking about something OTHER than Epstein. For hours.
I want to emphasize I’m NOT saying the mass shooting in Manhattan shouldn’t have gotten significant coverage. All of them should. What I object to is the hours on end blather with the “BREAKING” banner on the TV screen when the same few known facts and same typical questions/speculation are discussed with no new actual news! More people died around the country for lack of adequate medical care yesterday than died in Manhattan. And will today. I could cite other tragedies but my point is that news outlets lose all perspective sometimes. More importantly I believe that just as Trump was looking for something, anything to get Epstein coverage to go away news outlets were hoping they’d have a chance to oblige him. To try and suck up to him.
Eventually, well past eleven p.m. I saw on MSNBC some coverage of other news, including a few minutes of Epstein but the fact remains we had a long, solid break from Epstein or damned near any other news (all of which is damaging to Trump) and no one was more pleased than Donald J. Trump. The whole thing makes me sick. Trump was gifted an UNDESERVED break. Worse, major news outlets were likely as happy as Trump to be able to spend all that time giving it to him! It remains to be seen if five or six hours of NO Epstein ‘broke the spell’ that has been weakening Trump. Let’s hope not.
