Nervous Democrats Have To Put Up Or Shut Up. NOW!

I’ll try to make this rant short. The title tells you where I’m headed so I’ll try to avoid too much getting into the weeds. I see a couple more House Democrats no one outside their Districts never heard of announced today that President Biden should step aside.  And of course pundits would have us believe countless more want to do so but are afraid to speak up. Well, I’ve written this week about what I think of pundits. They been given an assignment from those who pay them and by god they are going all out to please their bosses and try to convince the public President Biden has no chance. That the Party is deserting him.

And some, notably Matthew Dowd is adamant, even angry in claims that voters have deserted in droves. He doesn’t provide any data or polls. But the other day he almost shouted at the camera that any of us still backing the President were fools. Hopelessly delusional. Other pundits suggest more calmly similar sentiments. They put it more in terms of the President bleeding support and there’s no way he can stop the bleeding. Their point, and their mission is to scare the bejesus out of Democrats so that the 19 no name House Democrats and the one (I think it’s just one although Bennet from Colorado all but called for the President to step aside) Senator, a relative handful of people are the ripple that will turn into a wave. One that will wash away President Biden and bring forth the media obsession of a brokered convention. With all the ratings and ad revenue it will have. Dollar signs are dancing in the heads of both executives and “talent.”

There are two problems, flies in the ointment. For all the hype about polls showing such a high percentage of people saying President Biden is too old, they don’t want to talk about additional questions that get asked. I wrote the other day about a WaPo/ABC/Ipsos poll released this week. Earlier today PZ’s Durrati posted an article about a new Marist poll that has just come out.  Both I want to emphasize have been conducted well after the infamous debate debacle. Voters have had a chance to process it, and ALSO listen to the constant drumbeat of pundits and some Democrats saying the President must “accept reality” (he can’t win because even Democrats no longer support him) and withdraw.  The thing is (and I keep mentioning this) the night of and day after if you looked at enough coverage a few pundits (I guess the marching order from on high hadn’t filtered down all the way) talked about focus groups saying yes, the President had a bad night. However they ALSO said so did Trump citing his refusal to answer questions and spouting a stream of lies!

Yes, it’s important to pay attention to what’s going on in critical swing states and the President clearly has work to do. But though relatively few pundits want to talk about it pollsters keep asking questions after the ‘is President Biden too old?’ one and move into who respondents would actually vote for in a contest between President Biden and Trump. Lo and behold they are in a statistical tie!  I’ll say as I did in earlier articles that prior to the debate voters saw the President doing his job and doing it well. They also saw (not enough) public appearances where he was fine. Same right after the debate. Many of us looked at his post debate visit to a Democratic watch Party and asked “Where was THAT Joe Biden during the debate?

No matter. He kicked butt the next day in a rally over in Raleigh (I live in a suburb) and has done so since. He had an awesome week hosting the 75th NATO Summit, and made a surprise visit to the AFL-CIO meeting (also in DC this week) and gave a great unscripted set of remarks.  Then there was last night’s press conference. Just as before the debate this President has been doing his job and doing it well and making more public appearances and looking and sounding great. He had a rousing appearance in Michigan earlier tonight in fact.  We are told we’ll be seeing more of this in the weeks and months ahead – President Biden out there with the voters. Will, because of his lifelong stutter will have have some verbal gaffes as he always has in his career? Sure, but VOTERS are used to that. “Uncle Joe” is familiar to them. And voters don’t like pundits telling them to ignore their eyes and ears, and trying to blow up the verbal miscues that are simply part of who he’s always been.

Pundits are starting to get defensive about voters not giving their “awesome” take on the President its due. That voters are seeing/hearing them and see a cartoon bubble over their head saying “blah blah blah Biden’s toast.”  So that’s the first issue with the narrative news outlets are trying to shove down our throats in their quest to drive the President for the race and get their “holy” brokered convention.

So let’s turn to what’s in the title. My own (Democratic) Congress Critter hasn’t made any statements on the matter but I contacted her office just the same to let her know how I feel.  As in come out strong for the President and tell her colleagues to do the same. And ask them the question everyone should be asking of EVERY Democratic politician either saying the President should drop out, or hedging and saying he should consider it. That includes by the way none other than Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi.  The question?

WHO? Who is the candidate we feel we should give our support to?

It’s a question none of them, NOT ONE is willing to answer. Oh, there have been some names bandied about but Gov. Whitmer has said no. Don’t even consider her. Newsome? Someone else? We have one awesome Vice President in Kamala Harris but there’s no individual, much less a group of Democrats openly saying she should be at the top of the ticket. I’ve also written this week about the COWARDICE of some of the Governors and others who might have been trying to quietly engineer them being “drafted” and I say again – anyone who doesn’t have the guts to stand up and I mean right f**king now and say THEY should be anointed isn’t fit to shine the President’s shoes. I should note for the record I don’t believe for one second VP Harris has been trying to pull such a stunt. In fact, I would hate to be in the shoes of anyone who approached her to ask how she’d feel about being “drafted.” She’d cut their heart out and hand it to them!

So again I ask, if not President Biden then WHO? Who is the magical unicorn that will come down from the sky and unite the Democratic Party, and pull in the needed Independent voters?  Unicorns aren’t real. And neither are these foolish hopes by Democrats sh!tting their skivvies worrying about their own re-election!  If replacing President Biden was something people thought should happen (and I’m not sure I believe them but that’s what pundits claim many thought last year) then the time for all this would have been before the primaries. No one spoke or stood up. At least no one that could be taken seriously and who was capable of mounting a national campaign.

So Democrats and big money Democratic donors need to STFU about replacing the President and do what they SHOULD have done far more of the past year (plus) which is tout this President’s achievements, and what more he will do with a second term. Also, that same time, where the “is Biden too old” or “is Biden losing a step” talk is nothing new. During the time frame I just mentioned OUR side should have been daily asking reporters that question about TRUMP when they tried to get off the record comments about “concerns over Biden.” Well, our side blew that one. But starting now, this very weekend that should be the message going forward.

Leader Schumer and Speaker Jeffries need to gather their respective caucuses Monday and lay down some goddamned law.  First make it clear their is no miracle “unicorn candidate” that will suddenly appear. Second, this President has a huge amount of great stuff he and others can campaign on so be pushing that every day, every chance they get. And finally and most importantly put the fear of God into their people that every, and I mean EVERY time some reporter asks about the President’s age or mental fitness to flip it back on them and ask them Why do you keep harping on that when Trump is just as old, much less physically fit and says the crazy stuff he keeps saying.  Sharks vs. batteries?  HE is the one who’s lost it mentally.

It’s long past time to knock the pundit class back on ITS heels for a change.

But each person who’s called for the President to step aside, or strongly suggested he consider doing so should be asked to stand up and asked “WHO?” Put up or shut up. Either give us a name or STFU you with your bullshit and get on board promoting the President’s re-election and trashing Trump every chance you get.
