Okay, did they really not think about what they were doing? Did Republicans not remember that he had prosecuted cases at the Kosovo Specialist Chamber for war crimes in the Kosovo war? That, at the very least, should have told them what he is made of and what he had done. But no. It’s for another Trump Retribution Campaign. When Trump says “jump,” the MAGA Republicans jump. They don’t even ask how high. They just jump.

They want to talk to him. They want to question him about the two cases he was prosecuting for the DoJ. They want to convict him in the court of public opinion. Let’s just say they know not of what they speak. The man prosecuted international cases, for heaven’s sake! But they want to question him about the work he did in the Classified Documents and Insurrection cases, one of which he said *would* result in a conviction? Yea, that man. Heh. From AlterNet:

On October 14, Politico’s Hailey Fuchs reported that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) had sent former U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) special counsel Jack Smith a letter requesting his closed-door testimony. That letter, according to MSNBC opinion columnist and “Rachel Maddow Show” producer Steve Benen, signaled that Jordan and other allies of President Donald Trump were “going on the offensive against Smith.”

But Benen, in his October 24 column, argues that Smith — not MAGA Republicans — is the one who has the most to gain from testifying before members of Congress, although it needs to be a hearing that’s open to the public and not behind closed doors.

Yup. *That man.* “Sure, I’ll answer your questions – in a PUBLIC hearing,” We could expect Jack to get his notes set from what he remembers, and we could bet that he remembers a LOT. He has to, as a prosecutor. This is not someone who suddenly gets a promotion to attorney for Trump. Why are they forgetting this?

“To date, no Republican official has produced any evidence of Smith doing anything wrong,” Benen explains. “The (Republican) Party’s hysterics continue anyway … This week, Smith said he’s ready to respond to GOP questions — but he wants the public to see his answers.” After Trump narrowly won the 2024 presidential election, Smith asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan (an Obama appointee) to dismiss the election interference case, citing DOJ policy against prosecuting a sitting president. Chutkan granted Smith’s request, dismissing the case but “without prejudice,” meaning it could be brought back at a later date.

It could be brought back. That’s the Insurrection case. The “fainting flowers” want to know what Jack did. Well, there’s a lot. One would think he would have kept a copy of the case notes since the case was made public. So it’s not classified. It could have been viewed if the MAGA Republicans had thought to look. Except we all know they don’t think. To close:

“The Times’ report, which has been independently verified by MSNBC, added that Republicans on Capitol Hill ‘have privately been wary about having him appear in public, concerned he will undercut the president’s claims of innocence,'” Benen writes. “Those concerns, of course, give away the game. As we’ve discussed, Smith is an experienced, credible, and capable prosecutor who’s familiar with Trump’s criminal cases at a granular level. The more Republicans drag him back into the spotlight, the more Smith will be positioned to remind the public not only of the variety of alleged presidential felonies, but also of evidence the party would probably prefer to forget…. He’s not the one who needs to worry; they are.”

Benen continues, “‘You want to talk?’ the former special counsel effectively said. ‘Great. I have quite a bit to say. Let’s have a public conversation.’ Republicans have not yet said whether they’ll allow the transparency Smith clearly wants, although for the record, there’s no reason this Q&A would have to be held behind closed doors.”

BOOM. There ya go. He says public and he’ll answer questions. But he won’t if it’s behind closed doors. He could tie up a subpoena to talk in a closed-door session. This man knows his business. No idea where he is now since he resigned. Wherever it is, they’re lucky to have him. But this whole thing boils down to “what are they afraid of?”

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. What they are afraid of, is that if he testifies in public, they won’t be able to spin it in favor of Donold. And, like you said, the truth will come out. Truth is their kryptonite.
