There are many primaries taking place now but if you had to pick one which is going to end in disaster, to all intents and purposes, I think that the Herschel Walker contest to be decided May 24 would be the one you would pick. Walker’s candidacy has been straight out of the You Can’t Make This Shit Up file, it’s been rife with so much strangeness. His domestic problems, his multiple personalities, his hobby of playing Russian roulette — again, only the Great Screenwriter In the Sky can make somebody like this up.
This past weekend a few noteworthy incidents took place, both of them spelling the doom of candidate Walker. The first was his no-show at a debate (what is it with these Georgia Republicans? Shades of David Perdue and Jon Ossoff and we know how that one turned out) and as bad as that was, his faceplant on Fox News took the cake.
Not only the cake, it took the pie, and the entire bakery. The first clip is pure embarrassment, the second clip is even worse, if that’s possible.

Walker is reportedly leading Rafael Warnock by four points in an Emerson poll. I am too gobsmacked to even put together a comment. I can’t believe this doofus could lead a ficus plant by four points, let alone an intelligent and articulate man like Warnock. I mean, folks, Walker is 50 years old, a senate candidate and he’s talking about where he placed in his high school graduating class? And this is after lying about graduating from the University of Georgia? And he’s leading in a poll? My stomach is getting that clenched feeling it got in 2016.

However, polls have been known to be wrong and I want to look on the bright side. If there is any sanity left in Georgia, this guy will implode and this weekend was the beginning of it.

Top of high school, top of college, top of law school — what’s that you say, he’s not claiming to be lawyer? Well, maybe not the Herschel you spoke to, but the guy has multiple personalities. One of them is unquestionably a lawyer, another a doctor, another an Indian chief and so forth.

I can understand your WTF? reaction to that poll. You’re from Colorada and spent your life outside the south. However, this is Georgia and Walker was a bona fide football star who if memory serves led their flagship university to a National Championship. In the south there’s an old saying that the only two sports that matter are (college) football and spring football. (College football programs have spring practice that culminates in an inter-squad game) We talk about the south in “bible belt” terms but football itself is a religion and by god southerners worship at the altar of college football. That’s why for all his flaws Walker was actually always going to be a candidate with a real chance. His being Black also neutralizes some of the vote of Black people in that state at least with Black males. Don’t count him out until the voting is done and all the votes are counted.
Does it defy logic and common sense? Is it bat-shit insane? Yep. But this is the south and FOOTBALL we are talking about and way too fucking many Georgia voters won’t give two shits about anything Walker has done or not done since he left Georgia for the NFL or that he only came back to run for the Senate. No, they will vote for the guy who brought them glory on the gridiron decades ago. It sucks, but it’s a reality that has to be dealt with.

Add to that the guy played F.B. and he could have been developmentally disabled and still led in the polls. They all know who he was as a football player. That he probably had trouble learning the plays without having them explained in small words was never mentioned. But that he’s lied about his education and is apparently a victim of CTE should concern them!
