Figuratively, of course. She had a debate with her Democratic opponent, and she did not do well. As we all know, she is a milquetoast. She always says she is going to do something *with* the Democrats in Congress, and she *always* votes Republican. We know Susan Collins- oh yes, we do. She never does anything except consider sending a strongly worded letter.
But she always gets re-elected. It seems that Maine is just fine with nothing. Maine shares a border with Canada. They have to be hurting from the lack of business from Canadians. All the places that got lots of Canadian people for vacations and such lost it when Trump started with the ridiculous tariffs, and they are hurting even more now, since Trump decided to put some draconian percentages on Canadian products.
This time, her inaction may come back to bite her. She had a debate yesterday with her Democratic challenger, Troy Jackson. It did not go well. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Research opinion is mostly that he did well, but there are some who say he did not. Nevertheless, he had at least one moment that got her, but good.
With recognition to Raw Story:
On Tuesday, Collins faced Democratic challenger Troy Jackson in a debate weeks before the midterms. Asked what she would do about President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Collins pointed to a specific victory. “I was successful at getting road salt removed from the tariff list,” Collins said.
Jackson responded by pouncing on the answer. “What about everything else? We can’t eat road salt,” Jackson said. “With everything she’s doing with the Iran war, there will be so many less people that can afford to drive that I’m not even sure the road salt will be worth anything.”
Ouch. And if the situation here in America continues, that may very well come true. Trump appears in no hurry to resolve the Iran War and get gasoline and other prices back to normal. The situation is different in every state, but everyone is hurting because of tariffs and the war. Trump does not see this. He thinks the tariffs are bringing money into the US, but they aren’t. They change prices for the American people, and he is so insulated from us that he won’t ever know.
He is trying to build a 999-guest ballroom. He is absolutely oblivious. We’ve had some wretched Republican presidents, but he is the worst! Worse than the rest of them combined, minus Nixon. He is worse than Nixon, and it’s sad to say that in this day and age. (Let’s hope the new president is a diplomat and much better than Trump.) Then Susan Collins talks about getting the tariff off road salt. So? We don’t care except for how it influences road clearing.
She’s tone deaf. And blind. She has drifted into her own little world where Trump and Congress are right with everything they’ve done thus far for the American people (see: the BUB). But it’s about what they have NOT done for the people is the point.
We can’t eat road salt. No, we can’t. Even if Trump said we could (see: COVID). It’s come down to a balancing act between utilities, gas, and groceries. How many of us can go back to work from home? That’s not much of an option these days. Let’s hope it’s a blue tsunami and we can finally *do* something for the country. Let’s start with the War Powers and choke off what has become Trump’s vanity war. And please, get Susan Collins out of office. It’s past time. She can take her strongly worded letters with her.
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
