While we wait to see what is in fact the fate of the America Party, we do know that Elon Musk is not taking any crap from either Donald Trump or Scott Bessent right now. Bessent has risen to the post of Trump spokesman, which is a trifle odd for someone appointed as Secretary of the Treasury. Usually the White House chief of staff, communications director, or other personages along those line will act as the mouthpiece for the president. But not in this whack-a-mole misadministration. Here, we go to Treasury to know what Trump allegedly thinks and does and why. In any event, here is Elon Musk giving his opinion on both Trump and Bessent to both Trump and Bessent on social media.

The message here is clear, “mine is bigger than yours.” And if Musk is talking bank account or social media platform, yes, it must be conceded that his are bigger than Donald’s. And Donald, of course, will retort that he’s got more power. Which is also true. Donald could have a bunker buster dropped on Elon, at least in theory. We still don’t know in practice how far the military will go in backing Trump’s mania.
Back to Elon, here’s his Sunday salvo number two, this one directed at Scott Bessent.
only a sad jilted lover claims he was "used" after a breakup. he volunteered himself as a tribute every chance he got. pic.twitter.com/a82mhipWi0

That puts us at determining what is meant by “used.” Does Musk mean it in the pejorative sense, that Trump manipulated him for some purpose, or simply that Musk, being who and what he was, possessed assets which Trump found he could put to good purpose? I guess we’ll find out in the fullness of time how Musk feels he was “used” but for right now it looks like Musk is standing up to both Bessent and Trump.
And what’s the larger picture there? One thing is certain, I believe: Elon Musk loved the spotlight. I mean, he loved the spotlight like he loves the Ketamine. He basked in the crowds and the attention. Attention is a heady drug. And it’s a drug that, once you get a taste of it, you don’t want to lose access to it. You want more.
Trump is wired exactly the same way. That’s why he went to Iowa this past week for a rally. He needs the occasional Trump-loving rally, where he’s just there to be adored and they are just there to adore him. The press conferences don’t give Trump what he needs. He’s got reporters asking him questions that he has no answers to. He’s there because he has to be.
But the rallies are something else. The rallies are a love fest. Elon Musk became a part of that. He began to know what it’s like to be onstage in front of thousands of people at once, the kind of attention that rock stars know about, and politicians, but not people in too many other walks of life.
So I think a lot of Musk’s motivation is simply the lust for the limelight. I truly believe that. I think he wants to be the center of attention and be controlling the narrative. All else is secondary.
He doesn’t need the money. In fact, if anything, Musk’s foray into the political arena (and the social media arena as well) would convince him to run, if money was the issue. He has burned through billions of dollars since he got involved in politics.
But fame is something else. Sometimes fame and notoriety are the same thing, and Musk is fine with notoriety. He’s seen what it’s done for Trump and he’d be happy to have the same thing for himself.
Musk wants to be a player and one thing is certain, when you’re the richest man on the planet: you can choose which game you want to play in. All are open to you. Musk has now chosen politics, it looks like, and the only question is this: How is he positioned with respect to Trump and the GOP? It looks like colleague is out, so is it now gadfly? Combatant? Adversary? All three?
We will find out soon enough. For the moment, it looks like Musk isn’t letting any moss grow under him. He’s moving apace against Trump and Bessent and it should be amusing. That much is certain.
Remember the theme song from Beverly Hills Cop? It’s appropriate here. And if Trump’s on the receiving end, I’m all for it.
