Some people just need to be slapped for their condescending attitudes. We are in the 21st century!

Representative Mary Miller introduces Sarah McBride as “The gentleman from Delaware, Mr. McBride”. What is this bullsh*t??!!!! What is wrong with these people? Are they so insulated in their own, prejudiced world that they can’t accept what and who someone is? They keep their eyes closed and turn away, thinking they are always right, even when they’re wrong, heck, even when they’re SHOWN they’re wrong?

We knew it was going to be an uphill battle for trans people from the get-go. We knew it was going to be hard work, and be worth it in the end. Trans people are still people, after all. And it pisses me off that people can’t accept it. Hell, I wouldn’t have known she was trans until it made it into the news. She’s a perfectly lovely *female*. What does it matter what sex someone is to be a Congressperson? She was elected and she is there for her *constituents*. They obviously thought she would do well or they wouldn’t have elected her. That seems to me it should be obvious, but apparently it isn’t.

This is yet another sign of how we are going backwards in this country, and it’s getting faster. We don’t need to be going backwards. This is an example we need to show to the world – that trans people are people who happen to be trans. As long as they can do their job, what does it matter? But conservatives can’t stand it (remember Nancy Mace months ago?) because these people are afraid of progress. They could also be afraid of something I haven’t quite figured out yet. It will come to me. (If anyone does, please feel free to let me know.)

And all this about blocking assistance to trans kids? Oyyyyyy. They’ll have plenty of time to think about the change when they get to be *adults*. I know someone who is trans and she went through a LOT of counseling and conversations. She felt that being a woman is what she wanted. So, she chose to make the change. Puberty blockers and medical assistance are just not that big a deal. The kids will have a long time to think and consider what’s really right for them. Some might choose NOT to be trans. Well, that’s okay because it really is up to the person as for what they want to do. It’s not something that you can just snap your fingers and *poof* they’re changed. There’s a lot more to it than that.

But conservatives don’t think beyond the obvious. They only see what their eyes see, not what they hear or what they read. I expect most, if not all, of them stay well away from reading anything that might upset their worldview. Another thing – it makes you wonder how they grew up and what they were exposed to. It involves family and friends. It involves schools. We had a Black lady in my high school class and I never thought of her as Black. She was Carolyn. There was an Asian on my gymnastics team. I never thought of her as Asian. She was Lisa. I guess I was lucky growing up because I really didn’t get a prejudiced outlook like so many Republicans seem to have. Now, there were people who made me uncomfortable, that’s for sure. But I tried very hard to get past it.

They are people, folks. People. Look beyond the immediate outside of them. Well, doesn’t seem like that will happen but we can hope and try. Guess what, Mary Miller. They are PEOPLE, and Sarah is a she.

  1. Conservatives seem to be very preoccupied with other folk’s personal business. To me, that does not seem to be conservative behavior. Even if one is from a very sheltered background, you can always keep an open mind. My guess is, that is personal for them, as they seem very emotionally immature and insecure. My other thought is that they are pandering to the evangelical base, who always want things in black and white or binary, if you will.

    • Another thought is this: what would they do about a person who was born hermaphrodite, but in all ways presents, acts, dresses as female? No one, outside of parents, doctors, and intimate partner would ever know. What’s the difference between an intersexed person and a trans person?

  2. The real irony of denying puberty blockers to teens is that most of the right-wing’s pearl-clutching over trans people–with a special pearl-clutching over transwomen athletes–is that the biggest argument against trans people would be largely obliterated if teens had access to puberty blockers.

It’s also evidence of right-wing hypocrisy who pull the “parents’ rights” argument but then actually work AGAINST parents who support their trans kids having access to puberty blockers.

  3. Also, Ms McBride should start deliberately misgendering Republicon individuals (examples of “Mr Nancy Mace” and “Mr Margarine Traitor Greene” and “Speaker of the House, Ms Johnson”) and see how long they put up with it before telling them point-blank she’ll keep up purposely misgendering them as long as they continue misgendering her.

  4. thank you for this; it’s very important. What a horrible, anti-human moment we’re living through.
Not to be difficult, but the power of this piece is unfortunately compromised by one sentence:
‘Some might choose NOT to be trans.’

Use of the verb ‘choose’ in discussing trans folk is not appropriate and buys into the ‘sin’ narrative of the other side. People don’t ‘choose’ to be or not to be trans. They may realize they are or are not, but that’s different.

  5. My belief about “mean girls” and “mean boys” is that something important to their development as humans got missed. Not enough hugs. No parental redirection when they blurted out nastiness at someone else. Just basic attention from loving parents. Something is just not there. When mean kids age, they don’t mature. They become the “Karens.” They are the impatient jackasses who don’t want others to be ahead of them in line at the store. They are the road-ragers who terrorize our streets so they can get one car ahead of us at the next red light. Worse, they are the wife-abusers and children-abusers and animal-abusers that often get away with their crimes for too long. And, we increasingly see these emotionally-stunted people getting influencer status from others like them. When emotionally-stunted people vote for emotionally-stunted government, we get a “mean kids” Congress and President and, sometimes, Judiciary. Maybe nice folk need to get a lot more vocal in our public shaming of the mean kids. It takes courage, but even a little bit of “hey, stop that treatment” of whoever gathers allies who are glad someone spoke up. There are more nice kids than mean kids. I guarantee it! 😊

  6. They are terrified of people who are different. It gives them the willies that there are people out there who disagree with them.on religion, foreign policy, helping others, sexuality and gender roles. They break out in hives and are headed to anaphylactic shock.at the fear of the Other. Trans people are obvious targets along with gays. Mouthy women who don’t want to.push out a baby every year or two and don’t want to get married are another.
    Difference. The Other.
