It takes all kinds to make an entertainment capitol and right now we’re going to hear from one of the fringe players. I used to love The Sopranos. All the characters were great in my book, from the major players to the bit, and that includes this gal. But like with all things make believe, who the person portrays on the screen and who they are in actual life can be two totally different things.

Yeah, Jon Voight’s fans are going to swamp Taylor Swift’s, no question about that. It is unusual who ended up on the different sides of the cultural rift when it happened back in 2015-16, or who is there today. For example, I met Grace Lee Whitney back in the 1980’s. She lived in the Valley and so did I, and one day I was having coffee with a friend from Raleigh Studios. Raleigh is across the street from Paramount and Paramount is where the original Star Trek was shot back in the 60s.

Grace Lee Whitney played Captain Kirk’s yeoman, Janice Rand. So my friend knew Grace and introduced us and we chit chatted for a bit. Grace was not getting a lot of work at that point and Hollywood is known for that. Nobody knows when they’re going to work. And there are actors and other people who wonder every time that they get a job if that job is going to be their last and if they’ll ever work again.

So I never really thought about Grace much either then or afterward. She seemed to have the same problems as a lot of Hollywood’s lower echelon people (meaning no disrespect with that descriptor, it sounds better than “bit player” or third string or other ways of describing performers whose contributions are not as large as some other performers.)

In any event, fast forward to the year 2015, and lo and behold Trek Against Trump formed. It was a group of Star Trek alums who signed a petition endorsing Hillary Clinton and sharing their foreboding of Donald Trump. Grace Lee Whitney was not a signer in this group, she was on the pro-Trump train. Whitney had reportedly followed Trump on The Apprentice and approved of his plans to run for president. She might have been more avid of a fan except she died in 2015 at the age of 85.

In any event, that’s what I thought of when reading this story today. It does take all kinds and all stripes of political persuasion in Hollywood. I find it completely amazing that any woman would think that Trump is a viable candidate but evidently there are some.

I don’t think this is the smartest career move that Drea DeMatteo has made lately but if she’s comfortable with it, so be it.

The reality of Hollywood is that on any given day if 10% of the Screen Actors Guild is working, that’s a great day. Unemployment is normal. Working regularly is rare. I don’t think this woman has helped her working chances with either the vax stance or the Trump endorsement but to each her own, right?

  1. A good actor that is not top tier needs to be very likable or bankable with the folks casting. And professional (on time and available).

  2. There’s a reason she was clipped on Sopranos. Your character, all tits and ass, was still smarter than you actually are. Slept with RFK JR. yet? Affair number 50+ with a dead wife on his hands. You killers deserve to be wrapped in chickenwire and chains and dumped out at sea like Tony’s friend who betrayed the family. I have ZERO empathy for nazi child killing b*tches. LESS THAN ZERO.
