The southern border is the source of Republican angst, always, but never so much as when a Democrat is in the White House. Then their favorite cri de coeur notches up several levels in volume and hysteria. Nobody exemplifies this more than Donald Trump. He loves nothing more than to claim that “caravans” of people “from mental institutions and prisons” “rapists and drug dealers” are all pouring into the country over the southern border 24/7. And of course, once they’re there, then they’re immediately registered to vote, in his fantasy world.
This is sheer nonsense but guess who’s going along with giving Trump the issue to campaign on? None other than Addison Mitchell McConnell, Jr., the Senate Minority Leader who is known nowadays for zoning out into oblivion during press conferences. But when Mitch is more or less focused on day to day reality, he’s committed to doing the bidding of Donald Trump. This lends credence to the theory that if Satan had an R behind his name, McConnell would do his bidding. Happily, in fact. Liz Cheney takes issue with this, interestingly enough.
Not even a bit surprising. McConnell's the same guy who vowed the night of Obama's inauguration to make him a one term president. He said Rs wouldn't work with him on any legislation because he didn't want the American people to give Obama credit for bipartisan accomplishments

And not just Cheney is opposed to this. So is Mitt Romney.

Trump owns it now. There was activity afoot in the Senate which would have given some resolution to the matter, but McConnell is an old dog who can’t learn any new tricks and so he’s going to sway the Senate Minority towards backing the Republican candidate — which will assuredly be Trump.
Now if this was a normal election year and a normal candidate, this would not be so newsworthy. But the fact that a lunatic needs a hyperbolic issue to campaign on and McConnell is only too willing to hand him one is one for the books.
If McConnell doesn’t realize the danger that Trump poses at this point he will never get it. But, maybe Mitch is ready to go full-on MAGA. It’s irresistible to him, the idea that Trump might be able to get back in the White House, because all Mitch can see is stacking the federal bench and messing with SCOTUS, if humanly possible. The fact that our republic might be lost doesn’t seem to be impinging on him.
We’ll see where this goes. It’s interesting that Cheney and Romney are opposing this. Again, I say, I think you’re going to see this iteration of the GOP fold and some new conservative party rise from the ashes. Maybe they should call themselves the Phoenix party.
GOP could stop being Grand Old Party and become Government Of Phoenix. They’ve got to do something. The schism between MAGA and the old guard Republicans is not doing them or the country at large any good.
The “old republican party” IS gone and they HAVE been replaced by the new “Murikkkan Nazi Party”, spelled MAGA.

Just because it lands rightly on sympathetic, pre-disposed ears doesn’t make it true.
Ol’ Addie’s brain has been in the “get power at all cost” mode that he is incapable of making decisions based on what might just be best for his constituents. When you’re unable to make rational decisions because you brain is stuck in a rut, you do stupid-ass things. He is now doing something really f*cking stupid. Here’s to hoping he pays on his next election day because stupidity like this should not be rewarded with another 6 years in the senate.
