This is incredible, but seeing is believing. And none of us would believe much of anything about Donald Trump if we hadn’t seen it and painfully experienced it first hand. It will not come as a surprise to you that due to the grotesque incompetence and mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic by the previous administration, the death toll rose 15% last year and 2020 will go on record as the deadliest year in recorded U.S. history. The CDC will announce this shortly. Politico:

The agency will summarize its findings in an upcoming issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Its analysis will detail the rates at which U.S. residents of various races and ethnicities died as a result of the virus as well as the total number of deaths in each demographic group, those sources said.

Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and cancer, the report found. “Unintentional injuries” is normally the third-leading cause of death, officials said.

The upcoming report will mark the first time the agency has publicly acknowledged that the national death rate spiked last year and that Covid-19 played a role in the increase. According to CDC data, the 2020 increase is the largest since 1918 — when, in the midst of World War I, hundreds of thousands of people died of a flu. By comparison, the death rate decreased in 2019 by 1.2 percent compared to the 2018 toll.

Words fail me. But I’ve got that same feeling right now that I had the entire four years this colossal asshole was in office, which is a feeling like my head is going to explode, coupled with my guts churning and an emotional reaction of “How can anyone BE so fucking STUPID!?!” I never got an answer before and I don’t expect I ever will. As Trump has said, “It is what it is.” It’s one of those mysteries of life, the eighth wonder of the world, that sort of thing. Unbelievable.

  1. Here in Mississippi, Senator Wicker is already crowing about all the wonderful things the Covid bill does for Mississippians. They have no shame and no relationship with the truth.

    • I’ve read what Wicker is saying, all about how restaurants and small benefits will benefit. He voted against the bill, but a few hours later, he thinks it’s a good thing. I marvel. I truly marvel.

      • My understanding is that NOT ONE republiQanon voted for the Covid relief bill, and we need to keep hammering them on it and not let any of the bastards take any credit!
As to he who shall not be named taking credit for the Covid vaccine(s), he did NOTHING! He did not develop the vaccines, and did nothing to help the ones who did! Just like he did NOTHING to help the over 500,000 Americans who have died because of his lack of competence, empathy, and caring!!

      • I found this to be an interesting political move. The part of the bill he touted is the part he and Sen. Sinema added as an amendment. See, https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/542663-gop-senator-applauds-restaurant-stimulus-money-after-voting-against-relief. So he is having his cake and eating it too. “Look at me, Mississippians! I voted against this abomination but I also got you some relief that makes sense!”

Beyond the obvious, crass, cynicism of that, I loved Schumer’s response when asked about it on MSNBC last night. Basically, instead of taking a shot at Wicker, he said, “yep, there are bipartisan parts of the bill and we want to show the GOP we’ll work with them and use all their good ideas too.” A functioning Senate. What a concept.

  2. Well of course Trump is trying to take all the credit. And NONE of the blame for all the deaths and suffering. However, the stuff that allowed a vaccine to be developed in record time predates even Obama. It wasn’t much but even Bush 43 started nudging NIH to be more responsive to new viruses in the wake of a couple that we had to deal with on his watch. What really kicked things into gear was Obama talking with some of the experts on vaccines and his reaction (incredulousness) to our STILL primarily using the old, original technology of developing and manufacturing vaccines primarily (almost exclusively) with the chicken egg process developed back some seventy years ago. Given all the advances in medical technology he was right to question why the hell a LOT more effort wasn’t being put into taking advantage of developments the folks back seventy years ago couldn’t even dream of! That’s what really jump started real exploration into the processes that were utilized to develop this new round of vaccines. Obama also developed a “playbook” for how to handle an outbreak of one of the diseases we’ve already dealt with as well as any new ones which were bound to happen at some point. Which as we know Team Trump threw in the trash. However, quite a few companies had been trying new stuff for years but the whole money issue was a factor. With Covid plenty of money was there if they chose to accept it (not every company did) and since they felt pretty good about the progress they’d made in the last decade or so and knowing there’d be a big payoff if they developed a viable vaccine multiple companies went all in. I’m actually surprised that Trump allowed his administration to commit to funding and/or buying viable vaccines. Of course, as we would learn from that p.o.s. Bob Woodward who held back for six or seven months to boost his book sales Trump knew early on how deadly this virus was. He tried to pretend otherwise, but placed his bet on manufacturers delivering a vaccine by October. His own so-called October surprise. He was as we all know furious that the scientists did things by the book and try as he and his top political appointees might (and they tried mightily) the experts that have to approve things like emergency use authorization insisted on waiting for the kind of data that was required to make a good faith decision.

Anyone want to bet that at some point Trump is going to try playing the card of “Deep State” people withheld vaccine approval to hurt him in the election? HIs general big lie has been working pretty well for him but it’s not gotten him back into power. And Biden’s popularity even among Republicans is at the level of Trump’s own national approval ratings so he’s going to go after Biden and hard at some point. And if this summer we start seeing signs of a new normal (the old one is gone forever I think) that will be the time Trump springs this “The deep state screwed me and we’d have had everything back to normal for Christmas if the whole system hadn’t been out to get me” line of attack.

  3. How easy it is to forget that the first vaccine was developed by two Muslim immigrants in GERMANY with absolutely NO funding or support from the US. A second vaccine was developed in England.

Did someone make the Trompador king of the world?

  4. It’s sort of a fun parlor game to imagine what set Trump off to write that insane comment. Was he watching news about the Covid bill? Did he see a Biden approval poll? Did his lawyer call him?

He must be so much fun to be around now. I’m guessing Melania has many “sick friends” back in New York.
