This writer absolutely laid it on the line for Charlie Kirk becoming a “saint” because of his assassination. That’s not the right way to go. You have to consider the whole story. He did this in a very matter-of-fact way, which really drives the point home. From Raw Story:

Nation writer Elie Mystal on Friday tore into some arguments and hot takes surrounding the “canonization” of Charlie Kirk, a MAGA influencer shot dead this week in Utah, cautioning that the “martyred mascot of racism” has distracted people from facing heightened racism and the country’s raging gun problem. “To recap, a white man was murdered by another white man for reasons we don’t yet know, but somehow that means Black people have to catch hell,” Mystal wrote.

We should have seen the escalating attacks on blacks, trans people, and Latinx people with, I’m willing to bet, more to come. It will be attacks on anyone who isn’t white. Then attacks on women will escalate because the white supremacists will not want to be challenged by us.

Mystal called out the Yankees for their moment of silence for the right-wing activist and specifically Ezra Klein’s recent “unconscionably” titled “Charlie Kirk Was Practicing Politics The Right Way,” dubbing the New York Times opinion piece as the “worst argument of the week,” specifically citing his white privilege and shortcomings. “Moreover, it is entirely possible to condemn political violence and mourn the victims of political violence without lauding the political influence of the victims of the violence. Klein fails that should-be-basic test,” he wrote. “Charlie Kirk represented the very worst American political discourse had to offer.”

I knew about him, of course, but he was such a RWNJ that I wanted to stay as far away from him as possible. When I read the piece I’m quoting from, he was an absolute, far-right, misogynistic jerk.

Mystal argued that Klein ought to pay attention to this. “You see what I did there, Ezra? It’s really not hard.” For now, Mystal says he’s proud to be a Mets fan, saying he wants “people who practice politics to be better than Charlie Kirk. And Ezra Klein.” “All I can do is try to weather the storm. Violent whites have their blood up, and that usually means incredibly bad things for people like me. I’ve got public appearances that I probably need to cancel. I hope to survive this by staying as far away from white folks as I possibly can until their fever breaks.”

Who knows when that will be? Who is going to be next? Turning Charlie Kirk into a saint is a really bad idea. We don’t need to celebrate him. He was incredibly vile. And other words, too many to list. He doesn’t deserve to be a saint. He doesn’t deserve to be a martyr. I hope the news gets a clue and will move on to the next story because I’ve had it with this crap.

Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help democracy survive. If you can help, please do. Thanks. Ursula

  1. Susan, I have been cringing each time I hear or read something about making Kirk a martyr or a hero or erecting a statue of him. One of our nation’s founding principles is freedom of speech, but the right wing extremists want it only for themselves. They denigrate the principles of “the librals” and think nothing of demonizing or trashing us day in and day out. But it is mostly (almost nearly always, I would posit) the left who beseech everyone to seek our better angels as Abraham Lincoln prayed we should. But come to think of it, Abraham Lincoln is NOT the right’s go to guy for philosophical inspiration. Charlie Kirk had every right to “speak his mind in the public square.” But so did my state of Minnesota’s Democratic Speaker of the House, Melissa Hortmann, who, along with her husband Mark and the family golden retriever, were assassinated in their own home on June 14th of this year, and State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette were shot multiple times in their home by the same gunman. We could easily have lost the Hoffmans too; their gunshot wounds were life threatening and the Hoffmans’ recovery has been long and difficult. tRump never so much as acknowledged these events in July. That is way beyond the pale for a President of the United States, and he ratcheted up the rhetoric today again. Senior White House Correspondent Vaughn Hilliard appeared on MSNBC’s The Weeknight just now and reported on the latest opening (wide) of our *resident’s famous cake flap. tRump indicated this morning that the assassination of Kirk demonstrated that citizens on the left were to blame for everything wrong in the this country and should be held accountable for any political pushback. Folks on the right, however, should be cut loose because their actions are in pursuit of the principles that will unmistakably make our country grate (sorry, GREAT) again. Woo ha. I think we have reached an impasse here. We should all put on our Better Angel suits and at least try to “cosplay” the role. Maybe some on the left can convince some on the right to play nice. (But tRump still needs to go.)

  2. Wasn’t the guy who shot him secretly his gay lover?

    Some people are saying.

And it’s the same as what was said after the Pelosi hammer attack.
