I want to ask you a question based on the following: Remember the fury that exploded when a plea deal was worked out between Hunter Biden and David Weiss, the prosecutor originally assigned by Trump AG Bill Barr to go after him. Conservatives from Trump on down were as outraged at Weiss as they were Biden and his father. When the plea deal blew up Weiss got the proverbial message. He knew the only way to redeem himself would but to put Hunter Biden in prison and he set about his MAGA ordered mission with a vengeance. Also remember that the two selective prosecutions for which criminal convictions were obtained and awaiting sentencing weren’t the end of his Inspector Javert pursuit.  Now imagine, especially in light of what happened under Barr’s tenure to Jeffrey Epstein.  Would YOU put your own child into the  hands of a DOJ and Federal Bureau of Prisons under Trump’s control?  I sure as hell wouldn’t, especially given the offenses for which Biden was charged and convicted.  Few other citizens would  have faced charges on either matter, much less on BOTH of them.

Much of yesterday’s news was a mix of pundits and politicians commenting on President Biden’s ‘blanket’ pardon of his son Hunter. I swear I wish I knew how to buy stock because I’d have invested everything in fainting couches!  For me, as I wrote here on Politizoom Sunday night the news was something to finally be truly thankful for during Thanksgiving weekend. I still feel the same way. I expected Republicans to go ape-sh*t over the pardon. Maybe even a few Democrats and pundits maybe would pose some mild criticism.  What I have found stunning, hell infuriating is the amount and intensity of the criticism from Democrats and the non-RWNJ pundit class. WTF?

Was the pardon unusual? Yes it was. As this article from Politico says it’s been literally generations since we’ve seen such a sweeping pardon.  It cites freaking Nixon’s pardon as an example for how sweeping in scope the President’s pardon of his son was. Of course, Nixon’s crimes were much larger and more numerous but I remember that time well. Ford believed the whole Watergate thing needed to be over. Done. That there was too much other stuff the country should focus on instead of putting Nixon in jail – assuming Nixon lived long enough for the inevitable appeals to play out.  Those who believe it ultimately cost Ford the election in 1976 have made a solid case. And the plain fact is Ford knew it would hurt his chances but he did it anyway. I’m of the school that came to think Ford didn’t cut any secret deal, but rather did what he thought was right and take whatever consequences (like losing the election) came.

Well, Joe Biden doesn’t have to worry about re-election. Alas, many Democrats are having ‘vapors’ fearing the GOP will use this against THEM come 2026. They are also worried about it giving Trump political ‘cover’ to pardon January 6 criminals.  Really? Does anyone think Trump won’t do as he damn well pleases on that one?  I’m not so sure he’ll pardon them. Or all of them at least.  Sure, the MAGAs will be mightily pissed if he doesn’t but Trump is Trump. He’ll get them to, if grudgingly come around. No, what Trump is probably already hearing from semi-sane Republicans and more importantly big donors is to NOT go crazy with J6 pardons because there will be troubles enough in 2026.

Biden’s pardon of his son vs. Trump’s pardon of a boatload of J6 riotous seditionists?  THAT is an argument any Democrat should embrace out on the campaign trail.  From where I sit a Democrat that can’t win that particular argument is going to get their butt kicked anyway! The White House issued a statement from the President everyone should read:

“Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter. From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted. Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form. Those who were late paying their taxes because of serious addictions, but paid them back subsequently with interest and penalties, are typically given non-criminal resolutions. It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.

The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Then, a carefully negotiated plea deal, agreed to by the Department of Justice, unraveled in the court room – with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.

No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong. There has been an effort to break Hunter – who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of unrelenting attacks and selective prosecution. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me – and there’s no reason to believe it will stop here. Enough is enough.

For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision.”

Short. Direct. To the point and as far as I’m concerned FACTUAL.  That gun charge wouldn’t have been brought in any other case in Delaware. I recall reading somewhere someone had done a search and found about forty cases where it was used and in every case but Hunter Biden’s it was an “add on” charge to part of a larger crime like robbery, assault etc.  Hunter Biden’s was the only time it has been tried (at least in anyone’s memory) as a “stand alone” charge.’  Anyone want to guess why in Hunter’s case the Special Prosecutor DID go after Biden with this charge? Well DUH!  Of course it was selective prosecution. However the law is the law and juries take their jobs seriously. They probably thought it sucked but they did their legal duty and voted to convict.

Then there’s the tax case which the President’s statement also talks about.  Hunter Biden is one of countless people who made a ton of money and got too creative with their taxes. Being the son of such a prominent politician he should have known better but he was after all a freaking addict so good judgement wasn’t part of his make-up for quite a few years there.  The IRS flagged his return, and went after him for unpaid taxes.  He argued his side and lost in a Civil proceeding which is how such cases are typically handled. He paid his back taxes, the penalty and of course (the IRS is merciless) interest and the whole matter was closed.  Except the GOP and Trump in particular saw Hunter Biden as a weapon to be used against his father Joe Biden.

Remember, the criminal investigation and eventual prosecution of Hunter Biden started under Trump!  Biden could have shut the whole thing down but he had faith in the system. For a while there it looked like even if unfair (selective prosecution) a deal had been worked out but it fell apart because word was out and some Republicans were raising holy hell. Don’t tell me for one second that didn’t infect the proceedings and influence that judge to blow up the deal. And the prosecutor was catching particular hell for ‘going easy’ on Hunter Biden and HE got the message loud and clear. From then on his mission, as assigned by Trump and the GOP was to put Hunter Biden in prison.  That’s why the gun case and the slam-dunk conviction went first. With that conviction on his record, it would give the judge in the TAX case which had been refiled as a CRIMINAL matter cause to put Hunter in prison. For that matter in the sentencing for the gun case the different judge could also cite the other case.

On top of all THAT, the prosecutor was going full speed ahead looking for other financial transactions and tax matters to charge Hunter Biden with. It was a f**king witch hunt plain and simple. It wasn’t going to stop even if Trump had lost. But Trump won and I can see Trump pardoning Hunter on the two current cases while behind the scenes saying ‘Get his ass on other stuff’ and using the ‘pardon’ for his own political ends. Part ‘owning the libs’ and part political cover for pardons of some of the J6 criminals.  But the point is that Hunter Biden was, if Trump and his people could possibly do so find himself in prison.

I’ve written before that for YEARS the GOP goal of their fevered pursuit of Hunter Biden was fueled by a desire for him to just give up. To commit suicide. Like all of us they saw how devastated Joe Biden was over the death of his other son.  Hunter committing suicide would have been it for Joe Biden.  Yes, they are that despicable. Cruel. And those who would protest the loudest at that are those who most wanted, and STILL want to see Hunter Biden kill himself!

Which brings me back to the title of this piece. Journalists, and Democrats won’t touch this with a ten-foot pole. But the plain fact is that even if neither judge sentenced Hunter Biden to prison the pursuit and prosecution of him would continue until Trump’s DOJ secured another conviction and got him imprisoned. And, like Jeffrey Epstein Hunter would be found dead in his cell ‘by his own hand.’  I’m as certain of that as I am that Epstein was murdered in his cell. An awful lot of very rich and/or powerful people never, EVER wanted Jeffrey Epstein in court defending himself against criminal charges.  He was a dead man walking from the time he was put into that facility.

You might reasonably ask ‘If Joe Biden is no longer President what would be the incentive to hurt him by staging Hunter’s suicide in prison?’  Simple. Payback. Trump wants it for getting his ass beaten by Joe Biden. So do a whole passel of Trumpy folks on Capitol Hill. They want, they CRAVE to see Joe Biden die as a broken old man whose son committed suicide in prison!  You will never convince me otherwise.

President Biden I feel in my heart hates that it came to this. But deep inside he knew where this was headed. His only remaining son in prison. And him with no power to protect him with extra security.  If I were Joe Biden I wouldn’t be able to stop considering that worst scenario. So the only way to stop it was to do what President Biden did. Take the prosecution of his son off the table. Period. End of story. Or, as President Biden said “Enough is enough” and save his son and family.  Trump wouldn’t lift a finger to save his own two sons. Well, maybe Fredo 2 (Eric) but Don Jr. has been a lifetime disappointment to him. His oldest daughter has been nothing but an object of his sick, twisted sexual fantasy and who knows if he’ll develop a similar obsession with Tiffany?  Trump comes from a f**ked up family and created a sort of family, albeit even more f**ked up of his own. Joe Biden and the Biden family are better people made of better stuff.

For anyone out there including and especially Democrats I say take a good and HARD look at how all this would have played out had Joe Biden not issued the pardon he did.  Think about if it was THEIR child that would be one day winding up in prison and in a system controlled by Donald Trump and his minions. That now adult child having battled demons that entered his soul during a car crash that killed his birth mother, his baby sister and badly injured himself and his big brother.  Demons that manifested as drug and alcohol addition as an adult. Severe depression and years of being used as a political weapon against his father.  Think about how such a person would far in prison.  And with no shortage of people, both other prisoners and staff who wished that child ill.

Then tell me YOU wouldn’t spare your child that fate. To, if you had the power to do so, pardon him or her. If you say you wouldn’t your every bit as big a f**king liar as Trump and Republicans!  Finally, take a look at what Hunter Biden was pardoned for. Tax avoidance which is common as mud, and after a civil proceeding he paid up and the case was closed. Only to be re-opened again as a criminal case. In the other case he lied on one question of a federal gun purchase form about being currently an addict, a charge I’ve already addressed. And one in EVERY other case conservative gun rights goobers would have howled at the moon over. Hell, they’ve fought that form and some of the questions including that one in court. There’s even a case pending appeal that could result in that charge being stricken from the books in which case Hunter’s conviction would be overturned!

Now look at the long, LONG and sordid list of people Trump pardoned and THEIR crimes. Worse than anything Hunter Biden did. Worse than that Trump is appointing some of these slimeballs to high positions in his pending new administration!  But what are the headlines in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and on “news” show after news show harping on?  THIS one pardon by President Biden.  Spare me the faux “outrage” and hand-wringing from both the chattering class and way too many Democrats.

  1. Biden absolutely did the right in pardoning Hunter. The beast Patel was licking his despicable chops in anticipation of jailing him and God knows what would follow. The Epstein thing keeps any thoughts that Joe overstepped silent.

  2. Too right, Denis, any decent politician oughta be able to overcome MAGA arguments about pardoning Hunter! And, Joe Biden has given his entire life to this country. He gave Dems everything they needed to sweep every election in 2024, but they spent their time vilifying him instead. So, Joe finally said screw you ingrates, you will not take my son!!
I also agree with satirist Andy Borowitz telling the truth about why Trump is pissed about the pardon: “when you give away a pardon for free, you lower the market value of all the pardons I intend to sell!” 👏👏

      • Not only that but, as Presidential acts, they are bullet proof following the awful SC ruling. Trump can’t find a way round that when he goes down his enemies shopping list.

      • They won’t hold up with this Supreme Court. Also, A Biden-appointed judge has declared the pardon of Hunter is NOT a legitimate pardon, but only a “press release”. I guess Biden better get on some i-dotting and t-crossing while he still has a few weeks left.

        • PS apparently these are “new” charges and the alleged crime took place AFTER the above-mentioned case was settled and paid-up. Like that was all settled and he allegedly did it again. I do not have all the facts and IANAL. Which is why I make abundant use of words like “apparently” and “allegedly”.

  3. Very well done. You have amplified the Truth behind the vicious retribution of Trumpers. What objective person would believe otherwise?

    Thank You.

    • Dear William, I agree with your comment. But do you also agree with me, that TRULY objective people are an endangered species???? Thanks, K

  4. One of your finest articles, Denis. Written with an extensive grasp of the facts and with an equal measure of human empathy. A book on the entire Hunter Biden saga would be a fitting exposure of the Repugnican misuse of the law and of the DOJ, in the pursuit and persecution of a vulnerable victim for corrupt political gain and purely gratuitous cruelty.
