Watch: The Lincoln Project Goes For The Soft GOP Underbelly

During the 2020 general election campaign, The Lincoln Project was a nightmare for both Trump, as well as the GOP writ large. They pounded both Trump, as well as incumbents that they felt were too loyal to Trump with brutal commercials. And there is anecdotal evidence that they may have had some effect.

But since the bloody insurrection in the Capitol last week, The Lincoln Project has taken it to a new level. First they put out a brutal takedown ad, holding Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and Kevin McCarthy personally responsible for the carnage, the ad airing in Hawley’s home state of Missouri, where he is up for reelection in 2022. But now they’ve switched gears, and released a new ad that could cause more trouble for the GOP than any other so far:

If the ad seems a wee disjointed, allow me to explain. Rick Scott is not up in 2022, he comes up in 2024. The Scott video the ad starts with is one he put out when he was named the Chair of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. His number one job is to raise money for the RSCC to spend on the upcoming Senatorial races. The video was sent to high powered corporate potential donors.

This is the soft underbelly of the GOP, campaign donations. Trump has freely raped the RNC coffers for the last 5 years, pulling cash as he wished, and often failing to tithe his due amount back to the party in return. As a result, the GOP coffers are dry, and Shelly Adelson was just laid to rest in Jerusalem.

And the GOP needs every penny. For the last two cycles, Democratic candidates have easily outspent GOP incumbents due to incredible small donor fundraising. This forces the RNCC to step up and chip in. And that takes lost of corporate money.

That is the crux of this new Lincoln Project ad. In the last two years or so, corporate America has had to become much more socially active than they would like. From the Me Too Movement to Black Lives Matter, activists have started to flex their economic numbers, punishing companies that refuse to see the justice of their causes. And fueled by more activism from popular entertainers and athletes, who occasionally make ads for products, these companies have fallen in line.

That is The Lincoln Project threat. They are putting large US corporations on notice, they are watching. And if they catch them donating to the RNS, or the RSCC, they’ll just make another Rick Scott ad, but this one with the offending company’s logo displayed prominently. And they will keep on doing it until they feel that the GOP is sufficiently purged of Trump influence. This is going to get good.
