It comes as no shock that some members of the extended Trump Crime Family are having an internecine squabble. Remember back in 2017 when Trump’s consigliere Steve Bannon was shouting “It’s time to go to the mattresses” and he put together a War Room in the West Wing?

“Go to the mattresses,” a line from the film “The Godfather” about turning to tough mercenaries during troubled times, has circulated among Trump’s friends, said two people close to the war room discussions.

“The bottom line is they need fresh legs; they need more legs,” said Barry Bennett, who served as a political adviser to Trump during the general-election campaign. “They’re in full-scale war, and they’re thinly staffed.”

As Trump has participated in meetings with world leaders in recent days, senior aides — including Bannon, Kushner and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus — have met in the White House to discuss a potential reshuffle.

Oh, things got reshuffled aplenty, starting with Reince Priebus, whose head was first to be served on the platter. It’s fascinating to be looking at this through the lens of history. How glaringly obvious it is now that Reince Priebus, Mr. GOP Regular Guy had as much chance of lasting in the White House as an ice carving on Satan’s dining room table.

Now the sheer madcap chaos of 2017 is rearing it’s head again, almost as a rerun actually, it’s that crazy, as Roger Stone and Steve Bannon duke it out.

There you have it, Stone challenging Bannon to a duel on Info Wars. And the winner becomes the voice of America First, we guess? And Alex Jones is the voice of reason? He’s moderating the fracas.

Roger Stone is up to something. He’s been after Ron DeSantis lately and is presumed to be doing so as Trump’s proxy, and now he’s after Steve Bannon.

Call the shot how you see it:

  1. Smoke and mirrors?
  2. Giving the base something else to think about besides reality?
  3. Trump is foreshadowing his next run for office and how insane it will be?
  4. Creating chaos for the sake of distraction?
  5. They’ve found out that chaos is a good grifting tool?
  6. All of the above.

Your guess is as good as anybody’s. It’s hard to pick a favorite here because neither one of these guys can be labeled as the “good” guy, it’s more like trying to ascertain which one is merely charcoal grey instead of totally black.

  1. I think the pissing contest is real and somehow works into the attack on DeSantis ( mini Trump) but I don’t really have time to think about it.

  2. Historical note: “Going to the mattresses” predates The Godfather by decades. It’s mob jargon describing, literally, what happens when warfare breaks out between mob factions. All the wiseguys go to safe houses which they use as bases, said houses being equipped with as many mattresses as needed for the number of guys staying there for the duration of the war. Bannon may like to play wiseguy, but the real ones would chew him up and spit him out in a NYC minute.
