Donald and Melania are back in the United States and sighs of relief are taking place on the other side of the pond. Melania, in true form, managed to not curtsey when introduced to the Queen Consort or to the Princess of Wales. But then since she’s married to the King of Whales, that probably made a lot of sense to her. Both Queen Camilla and Princess Kate wore hats, as did Melania, but their hats didn’t hide their faces. Nor were they compared to lampshades or UFOs. (Gavin Newsom is in the lampshade camp but I think Melania’s headgear looks like a flying saucer. You may all chime in with your vote, or proffer a third opinion, if you have one.)

Nobody is quite certain exactly why King Charles invited Trump over for a second state visit but the best conjecture is that he wanted to humor the lunatic. If you read the Yahoo News article just linked to, you’ll see that King Charles issued an order which “made eyes roll” at the palace. But it makes a lot of sense considering the petulant child that Trump is, to get on his good side. King Charles is most likely trying to avert becoming the next Canada. Trump is nuts enough to want the UK to become America’s 51st state or suggest that Charles is actually a governor and not a king.

Rob Shuter #ShuterScoop exclusively learned that about the staff’s reaction to King Charles’ instructions for President Donald Trump’s state visit. The monarch had reportedly urged aides to treat their guest “like a king for a day” in a special gesture. A source claimed that he knew how much “Trump loves the optics,” including the extravagant “carriages, the trumpets, the red carpets.”

Therefore, the king seemingly ensured the president enjoyed the full royal experience. The insider alleged that he had ordered his staff to make the politician “feel like he’s king for a day,” reasoning that it was “the best way to keep him happy.” Moreover, the crown bearer’s move was apparently strategic and logical, rather than sentimental.

A second source opined that Charles would rather “flatter” Trump for a few days during his visit than “risk a diplomatic headache.” One aide revealed that the monarch had choreographed every little detail, including their coordinating outfits, to the perfectly timed welcome. It appears he “gave the order, and the court delivered.”

However, not all of it went through without at least some reservations. Shuter’s report alleged that some staffers “rolled their eyes” at the king’s orders, but things went through smoothly at the end of the day.

Let Donald feel like a big shot and avoid diplomatic headaches. Sounds good. As a matter of fact, it sounds like something Queen Elizabeth might have suggested to her son, figuring that the 2024 election might go sideways. Her Majesty knew what a dunce Trump was and she is credited with stating that Donald and Melania “had some kind of an arrangement,” arrangement being a euphemism for something other than a marriage.

So that’s the psychology of the situation and here’s the good news, sent by a PolitiZoom reader namd Tim in the UK. He thought we would enjoy this press release from the Stop Trump Coalition and indeed we do. Many thanks, Tim.

Tens of thousands turned out in London yesterday to say that Trump is not welcome in the UK. It was a great day – and part of a week of resistance to Trump and Trumpism.

Our protest kept Trump out of London. No photo at Downing Street. No speech in Parliament. No carriage procession.

In fact Trump didn’t dare to show his face in public – not in Windsor either, where locals came out to protest while activists highlighted the relationship between Trump and Jeffrey Epstein.

Trump’s “state visit” has been conducted hidden behind the walls of Windsor Castle and now Chequers. The government know they cannot do anything public – because they know what the public thinks of Trump.

That is all because of the power of your protest.

The national demonstration was supported by over 60 campaign groups bringing issues from Palestine and climate change to migrants’ rights – and a wide range of creative expressions of resistance.

Speakers including politicians, journalists and grassroots campaigners showed the breadth of the movement – and made the links between opposing Trump and fighting the rise of the Trump-inspired far right here.

If you missed the speeches, you can watch back our livestream here.

There were also protests in Edinburgh. So you see, King Charles and the Royal Family played their hands correctly, Trump was distracted because everybody was playing along with the King’s orders to keep the sienna tinted manchild from getting cranky and throwing a tantrum, and the true feelings of the UK were expressed by lovers of democracy who live there.

Nothing like having a *leader* who is loathed and humored like a mental patient when he goes abroad but that is the state of things. And frankly, do you blame Melania for hiding under hats? Or wearing dark glasses at night? She may be no Einstein (just the holder of a visa with that descriptor) but she knows what she’s married to and how people feel about him.

    • I SPY was a 1965 TV series that starred Robert Culp and Bill Cosby. The Mad magazine (25 cents — CHEAP!) feature SPY VS. SPY began running in 196 and continuing (according to Wikipedia) until 1967.

Writing about MAD brings to mind a recurring joke the crew over there repeated often — the striking resemblance of their “mascot” Alfred E. Newman to then pre-teen Prince Charles (“What, me worry?”)

  1. “Nobody is quite certain exactly why King Charles invited Trump over for a second state visit”

It’s a constitutional monarchy. Essentially, he goes along with what his government wants. PM Starmer wanted to charm T to defuse the tariffs issue as afar as UK was concerned so, on his White house visit and in the obligatary press conference, he pulled a rabbit from the hat aka a letter from his pocket from the King extending the invite. OK he had to read it to T and it worked a charm. T purred and preened.

  2. That hat – I’ve got it! ‘Melanie’ fancies herself someone who shapes style. She also as part of her contract has to pretend a certain number of times she supports Don-Old.

I’ve noted in the past times when Trumpty’s hairdo looks like he’s wearing a hair covered FRISBEE on his head. That freaking hat could be Mel’s way of making a frisbee into a ‘fashion statement’ – wearing a hat frisbee instead of a hairdo one like her hubby.

  3. While j Devlin is correct that it was almost certainly the PM, not the King, who wanted the visit, it did occur to me that it might also have been because the UK wanted to give all of us an the US a little break by removing him from here for a few days.

  4. Let’s give Natasha a break…if you accepted the check, and agreed to go..after all…it’s not everyday you get your ass wined and dined by real royalty, wouldn’t YOU want to hide under something? Even rich whores have standards.
