How quickly Trump forgets. He apparently doesn’t remember today that he called Jerome Powell “a major loser” and “Mr. Too Late.” He also claimed that he could fire Powell. “If I want him out, he’ll be out of there real fast, believe me,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni last week. “I’m not happy with him.” The only image one could get from this was of Trump grabbing Powell by the scruff of the neck with one hand and the seat of his pants with the other and propelling him towards the door. But that was last week when Trump was in Mr. Hyde mode. Now he’s back into Dr. Jekyll mode.

Powell made it clear that: 1. He could not be fired, except for cause; 2. If Trump tried to fire him, he would resist the firing and ultimately, 3. Jerome Powell called Donald Trump’s bluff. And of course Trump makes it all sound like media hype. It would be so great if some reporter would have read back his exact words from last week, “If I want him out, he’ll be outta there real fast, believe me,” but no reporter dares. In this brave new world we live in, that’s enough to get a media outlet banned.

This is all part of Trump’s average day, where he throws a fit, threatens something illegal and/or stupid, then finds out how illegal and stupid it is. Then somebody in his inner circle lays out to him how much doo doo he’s already stepped in that day and asks whether he wants to worsen his situation considerably. Then, Trump turns around, finds a scapegoat (usually the media) and announces his New Stance on the given issue.

What I absolutely am waiting for with great anticipation is to hear Trump reverse course on Pete Hegseth. Yes, he said that he was happy with Hegseth, in no uncertain terms — just like he said he was going to fire Powell in no uncertain terms.

Just wait. That particular betrayal is coming, I firmly believe, and it will be hilarious to watch. And expect Trump to deliver the news in exactly the same tone of voice, like this was his idea all along to can Hegseth, but the media made such a much about it, and so really it’s their fault. Watch.

  1. I suppose the regime could come up with a version of the denial used by Ron Ziegler, Richard Nixon’s press secretary. When confronted about his prior contradictory remarks during the Watergate scandal, Ziegler simply replied, “That statement is no longer operational.”

    • Funny. Sad we accept this from those in power…and then believe the future includes US. Not gonna happen on this suicidal path. We need a revolution of our fundamental cultural values…just not inventing shit like the Maga crowd loves to do.
