Trump is headed to Erie, Pennsylvania this coming Saturday to campaign. Well, that’s what candidates do. Organize and appear at events. The thing is, Presidential campaign events can be expensive to put on, requiring overtime for public services like police, fire & rescue personnel, sanitation workers to clean up afterwards etc. Like many a city/venue they worked with the organizers to make sure things would run smoothly and estimated how much it would cost them to make sure all went smoothly. Normally this is no big deal. Despite it being 2018 and word having gotten out about Trump stiffing places, they trusted him.
Well, you know how Trump loves to take advantage of folks. Pay them what he owed them? It was probably the highlight of his day to get to tell whatever aide asked him to sign off on the reimbursement no effing way! I’ll bet he laughed, and laughed. And, when he could catch his breath managed to say things like “SUCKERS!” “LOSERS” and so on before doubling back over in laughter. For Trump getting to do that kind of thing is as good as, if not better than sex!
As this article notes, Erie seems to have learned its lesson. Ask for their money UPFRONT. And pay what’s owed for the last five years. Here’s the thing though. I don’t think they’ve learned a damned thing. I read the linked article, and even the link within it to the original story in The Erie Times and nowhere does there seem to be even a hint at the city telling the Trump campaign “Pay up for last time, AND pay upfront for what it’s going to cost for Saturday or there will be no event. Even if the Erie Insurance Arena is willing to host it the city can refuse to authorize a permit. And use the fire & police departments from allowing access!
Granted, that would create an uproar but somewhere along the line you’d think that more and more places would grow a damned spine and tell Trump NO! That he has to “pay to play” and payment is due in advance. Oh, he’ll always be able to find new suckers out there who will believe all the have to do is submit a bill once the final tab is calculated and “the check will be in the mail.” If there’s any check mailed, it will be Trump mailing one from his campaign made out to HIM personally.
However, for a place that’s already been stiffed once it truly astounds me that they didn’t tell the advance team right off the bat “Your guy still owes us thirty five grand from five years ago, and it’s going to cost you THAT much just to sit down and reach an agreement on how much it’s going to cost you upfront, say no later than a week before the event to be wired into our general fund or no permit. And we WILL have police and fire personnel on hand to make sure your venue remains closed, and we WILL disperse any attempt to gather a crowd at the last minute somewhere else in the city!”
But you know what? The mayor and the city don’t (as I said) seem to have learned a damned thing. They are “working on getting paid”, which means they will extract a promise which won’t be worth the paper it isn’t even written on.
And they will get stiffed AGAIN!
