Nothing like internecine fighting, particularly days away from the time of peace on earth and good will to men, right? Right. Donald Trump observes no traditions or customs other than his own, which is dominate, grift, exploit. And if someone in the GOP doesn’t want to dance properly on the end of his strings, well then they become his target du jour. That’s as simple as that is. Chip Roy is insistent that he was “sent to Washington to cut spending.” That sounds reasonable. And Roy, not being a fool, knows that he needs to answer to his constituents. But Trump wants Roy and everybody else to answer to him. Here’s what that looks like as the last 36 hours or so until a government shut down tick away.

I suppose in theory that Trump could mark every Congressman or woman for a primary and Musk could finance it. But it is December, 2024 and November 2026 is a long ways off and if there’s one thing you can say about the American electorate it’s that they have short memories. Trump was soundly defeated in 2020 because of the awfulness of COVID. This year the fact that Joe Biden was old and slow and grocery prices were up, was the obsession of the electorate. And so they voted against their own best interests. Again.

If Roy intends to do his job properly, that’s one thing. But a congress member doing his or her job and one doing Trump’s will are not necessarily the same thing. And that’s what Roy is seeing happen in real time here. Supposedly Tom Massie is another no. I find that surprising, he’s a loyal Trump puppet. But maybe he’ll fold.
Maybe they all will fold. We’re seeing what happens when a dictator takes over in a representative democracy. The representatives are disabled. Therefore the process of democracy itself is disabled. And that was the point of the Trump election. We’re seeing it play out and Trump hasn’t even gone through the charade of putting his hand on the Bible and swearing to uphold the Constitution.
