Trump created the migrant caravan talking point as a means to ginning up the base to come out and vote racist Republican, but this looks to get very ugly.

Operation Faithful Patriot, the interagency effort responsible for beefing up security to the southern border has deployed 5,239 troops to that purpose. But here’s something interesting. Leaked documents reveal that combatant commanders have been briefed on not only encountering hostile invaders headed to the border, but also on unregulated militia members in alleged support of U.S. Customs and the Border Patrol, coming from this side. Newsweek:
“Estimated 200 unregulated armed militia members currently operating along the southwest border. Reported incidents of unregulated militias stealing National Guard equipment during deployments. They operate under the guise of citizen patrols supporting CBP [Customs and Border Protection] primarily between POEs [Points of Entry],” according to the documents.
The militia members call themselves “border observation and law enforcement support volunteers” which is a long way of saying vigilante. And they’ve co-opted their name from freedom fighters during the Revolutionary War.
Historically, Minutemen were once known as civilian colonists who organized to form self-trained militia groups during the American Revolution. Today, however, the Minuteman Project is an activist organization, which was founded in August 2004 by Jim Gilchrist and Chris Simcox and describes itself as a “citizen’s Neighborhood Watch on the southern border.”
Minutemen Project National Political Director Howie Morgan told Newsweek on Wednesday that the organization hoped to have its members out in full force at the border before the coming caravans arrive.
“We believe our nation is under attack by foreigners who refuse to accept the rule of law on how to become a citizen in the United States,” Morgan said.
This is just what we need. On top of a useless deployment of troops, made solely for the purpose of political theater and using the military as performance art, by the demented showman in the White House, now we’ve got armed wingnuts headed to the scene. On Monday, the Minuteman Project issued a call to arms, asking “Minutemen and Minutewomen” to “converge on the U.S.-Mexico border immediately to support law enforcement and military organizations already there.”
Here’s an excerpt from their lengthy, all caps message, headed “MINUTEMEN AND MINUTEWOMEN TO THE BORDER!” I’m not linking to it because I don’t want to drive traffic to it.
