This is amusing. I have never seen the august and venerable Wall Street Journal accused of “going for clicks” before. That’s the purview of humble outlets like the blog you’re reading. And yes, we go for the clicks, so we can survive, but we don’t lie through our teeth. The Wall Street Journal is not lying through its teeth. The only one, in fact, lying through his teeth is Donald Trump. Surprise, surprise. And on this occasion he got caught. Donald, how many times do we have to tell you, there is a tweet and/or a video for everything?
You heard Trump’s lie. And oh boy, are a lot of Republicans upset about this.

And of course Oddjob Steven Cheung chimed in, “This is nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media.” Um….Steven? You might be a White House communications director and all that but please take it from me, the Wall Street Journal is scarcely “liberal media.” Never has been, never will be. At least not the lean of their editorial board. But like a legitimate news outlet is supposed to do, they get the facts straight and so far they haven’t faltered on this massive news story.
And yes, that brings us back to why Rupert Murdoch is going along with this, particularly after Trump said last week that he spoke with Murdoch and Murdoch said he would “take care of it.” There’s all kinds of conspiracy theories launching now about that, including that J.D. Vance met with Murdoch before the release of the story.
Who knows? That could be true. But I don’t think Vance is attempting to push Trump out or anything whacky like that. I think that if and when Murdoch talked to Vance it would have been to level with him about the reality of the situation.
But that still does not explain why Murdoch is taking the tack he is — other than the obvious, which was that Trump was not his choice for either 2016 or 2024 and so Murdoch sees no reason to go out of his way to protect Trump. Sometimes Occam’s Razor is a reliable tool and that may be what’s going on here.
No need for big explanations and conspiracy theories. Murdoch has been around a while, he’s in his 90’s. He’s seen them come and he’s seen them go. He’s gotten what he’s gotten out of Trump and especially after taking that hit for $787M he’s probably all too happy to see Trump go. And don’t let the door hit you in the ass, Donald.

I thought it was odd that this story ended up with the wsj. the nyt, Washington post, even the st Louis post dispatch just not the sort of thing the journal is known for. but I guess the point is they have uber credibility (as opposed to fox) and I think you’re right, Rupert has decided it’s time for trump to go. i have no doubt Rupert Murdoch is an evil man but he’s infinitely more intelligent than trump or any of trumps minions. but he’s hedging his bet by keeping fox away from it. I think wsj has more, and more significant, info and Rupert is just waiting till he has better control over the situation.
as for Vance, either trump sent him to plead with Rupert or Rupert summoned him to inform him of the situation.
I’m wondering how anyone who has lied everytime he opens his evil cakehole…gets caught red handed? The other question is why does it matter.
