I really wanted to use a word other than garbage in both the title and the title pic. Bullshit is the truly accurate word for it. And I’d have much rather used that image of a scene from Jurassic Park – the one where Jeff Goldblum’s character stared at that HUGE dinosaur spoor and said “That’s one big pile of sh!t.” Trump didn’t just spread lies and bullshit with a trowel, he dumped truckload after truckload in the House Chamber and through TV screens.  So there’s that.  The almost continual lies. But something else struck me. Was the content of the speech combative?  It sure was. But the energy with which it was delivered was what I found interesting. If you didn’t watch, make the effort to look at a five minute clip or two online and tell me Trump, while not entirely subdued certainly wasn’t fired up!

I saw a news blurb about even J.D. Vance supposedly being caught whispering to Johnson something to the effect of ‘how much longer is this going to go?’ Uh Oh. If that’s true ole J.D. might find himself in the doghouse tomorrow. A small victory I guess but I’ll take what I can get.  In the post speech coverage (I was tuned to MSNBC) there was some awesome fact checking to be sure. If you’d like to see some from another outlet but in written form here’s some from from NPR. I’m sure there will be a ton of fact checking articles and news coverage from pundits tomorrow. However the fire hose of lies/bullshit was truly Trumpian in scope.  No amount of fact-checking will cover it all!  I also don’t want to turn this into one of those loooooong pieces I’ve been known to write.

Given that I’d like to return to Trump’s delivery. I can think of two reasons why it wasn’t as rousing as I’d expected it would be, at least for the first half-hour to forty-five minutes before he ran out of gas. Well, three now that I think about it.  He was after all stuck to reading from a teleprompter and he’s never fully “Trump” when he has to do so. However there are a couple of factors we should all think about.

First, Trump knew he had nothing but lies and bullshit to offer. That’s usually okay with him, especially at his signature rallies. However for all his bluster he knew going in half, or virtually half the room wouldn’t be cheering much of anything he would say.  He COULD have given an aspirational speech dotted with lots of vague bi-partisan themes and gone much lighter on the self-promoting lies. And topics where he knows damn well the public is in a foul mood. He knows he’s now underwater in polling approval again.

The other thing is something I’ve already written about. Trump also thought he would score a ‘bigly’ international triumph with the Oval Office mugging of Ukraine’s President last Friday. That if not most, many of our allies would fall in line or at least keep their misgivings to themselves. Instead there’s been a rising chorus of ‘What the hell is WRONG with you? And America for putting YOU back in power again?’ coming from around the world. THAT I truly believe has Trump shaken. It didn’t help to have Vance trashing the military sacrifices of our allies during America’s longest war. You know, the ‘War on Terror’ baby Bush started.  If Trump was hoping the criticism from our allies might die down that crap from Vance reinforced their resolve to tell Trump and the United States our time as the undisputed leader of the free world is OVER.

Oh, and add in Alina ‘Habba Dabba Doo’s’ comment about Veterans earlier today and I can assure you THAT is going to likely go down even worse with our allies than it will here at home.  So yes, while there were moments of “Trump” here and there overall I found his energy (from the start) strikingly lacking.  Republicans on the Hill have been terrified of Trump but it’s clear they’ve got good reason to think the voters who put them in office are pissed off at Trump and the GOP to the point where they can kiss their positions goodbye. Or the ones that remain will find themselves back in the minority on Capitol Hill. Perhaps Trump also is coming to that realization. Well, that’s it for tonight.

Friends, we thank you if you have already donated. If you have not, and are able, we use the donations to pay the overhead until our traffic gets back up to normal again. Everything crashed after November 5, which is why you see people like Joy Reid getting fired and Jim Acosta resigning. We are at war in this country. Truth v. Lies. This blog will always bring you the truth as long as we have internet access and Kash Patel doesn’t carry us off. I have no idea how bizarre things could get. Truly I don’t. But we’re in it together. Ursula

  1. Garbage in, garbage out. Voters put him in and he’s delivering.

Historians won’t compare trump to Washington, but they may see him as Herbert Hoover, who presided over a protectionist congress that passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act. It was one of the triggers for the Great Depression, and it had the opposite effect of what was intended, protecting American farmers and workers.

I hope congress flips and takes control before really bad times set in. The margins are razor thin and a few seats could spell the difference. So, get organized for the special elections and mid-terms, hold your current reps’ feet to the fire and consider going to the streets in protest if they don’t do their jobs.

  2. Will this be my last post on this site? I don’t know, that’s up to Ursula, but maybe I can stave off exile for a while longer because zoomies i have nothing but praise this morning! Praise for our President and the magnificent speech he gave last night. I’d like counter the piece above point by point but I’ve no time today. As predicted the skulking democrats found nothing they could clap for. Not even child cancer survivor or the resurgence of our great military. But rest assured that America is back baby! Standing restored on the world stage, no longer a pushover for anyone. American exeptionalism and the American dream is renewed.

    • You just wrote your opinion. No bad language (which I’m frequently guilty of and it’s not necessarily a reason to suggest a ‘timeout’ or banishment), no threats of harm to others or anything else that would warrant me, or Ursula banning you. I strongly disagree with you as I suspect most readers here do. But I won’t engage much for now. I disagree with your assessment of reaction to child cancer (yes, little camera time was given to Democratic reaction but I saw people clapping albeit while seated, and no signs being held up) and when it comes to our military it’s BEEN the best in the world for a very long time. Will it remain so with an incompetent SecDef and deputies and a leadership that is loyal to a President (this or any other) more than the Constitution they (as did I when I was a Marine) swore to protect? I fear not but that’s a long debate to have as it requires digging into a lot of particulars.

I take you at your word it’s ‘one of those days’ and you don’t have time to write a lengthy comment about the speech. Hey, we all have such days. But you’re certainly welcome to come back and make your case. I know as a political junkie I heard lie, after lie after lie last night. Hey, politicians mislead, stretch the truth and flat-out LIE sometimes. Just not nearly so much as Trump does. Anyway rest assured you are quite free to come back and offer contrarian thoughts/opinions for the reasons stated. You know you’ll be challenged and it seems unlike many contrarians (they exist on both sides) you’re willing to deal with that. I don’t usually care for what you have to say but I’ll respect your right to say it, while reserving my right to call you out sometimes. Just as I think you would with me on a conservative site. Fair enough?

    • Hegseth is destroying the military. A drunken sex offender is the opposite of what we need. He’s on wife number 3, probably because he’s a drunk who gropes women and won’t take “no” for an answer. The military has disgustingly high rate of sexual assault and appointing the likes of Petie Boy, who behaves like a frat rat, isn’t going to bring it down.

Why should we applaud.and celebrate bipartisanship when the Republicans gave Biden nothing but grief and insukts?
