[Disclaimer: this does not apply to our police forces or military. This is different. It certainly *does* apply to DHS.] Someone *finally* said it. We’ve been screaming about this for a long, long time. Thoughts and prayers do nothing. Legislation does. How many more innocent people are going to be killed before something finally gets done? How many people have tried to get something done and had to deal with the hardliners screaming about rights? Their rights end the moment they point that gun at someone because they want to. I get very preachy. Feel free to stop reading. With thanks to Raw Story:

Child safety advocates renewed calls for tighter gun control measures following a Monday mass shooting at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island that left three people, including the gunman, dead and three others injured. WPRI reported that the father of a North Providence High School senior shot five members of his family at a hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket at around 2:30 pm local time. The student’s mother was killed at the rink, while his sister died after being rushed to a local hospital. Three other relatives are reportedly in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The right to bear arms is lost when someone points a gun at someone else just to hurt them, rob them, or whatever. And if they pull the trigger (also see: ICE), they most certainly have lost that right. Our country is getting numb to mass shootings. Think about that a bit. We have so many that it barely makes the news anymore. It’s a small headline tucked in somewhere that could easily be missed. What the hell is it going to take for something to be done finally? Is it ever going to *be* done? Thoughts and prayers. Feh.

We realized pretty quickly that it was a gunshot. It was very scary,” hockey player Silas Core said during an interview with WCVB, adding that he and his teammates rushed into a locker room. “We barricaded the locker room with our bodies. We were all pressing up against it,” he said. “Everybody was, you know, worried about our parents and everybody.”

Gee, ya think? This time it’s not sarcasm. This time it’s about everyone being worried about everyone else. People were worrying about each other. That’s the good thing. There is still some humanity left that cares about others. The shooter obviously didn’t. There may never be a reason listed. And if there is one, will we be able to understand it? That’s highly unlikely. Of all the shootings we’ve read about in the news, no matter where in the world they are, the reasons don’t make sense. Then again, most of us don’t have the mindset to shoot someone. Thoughts and prayers, my ass.

Core’s mother told WCVB that everything “just happened so fast.” “You don’t even know. You know, you just see everybody else on the ground, and you kind of get on the ground,” she said. “This is really disturbing, you know? And it’s the other team’s senior day. Like, it was supposed to be a special day for the team.” A woman who said she was the shooter’s daughter told WCVB that the man suffered from mental health problems. “He shot my family, and he’s dead now,” she said. Gun control advocates demanded more than the customary thoughts and prayers.

The day will be remembered for gunshots, not for honoring the seniors. That’s one hell of a memory to have. It still doesn’t make any sense. It *never* makes sense. They’ll remember those sounds for the rest of their lives. What a legacy to have. It’s going to take some serious work to try to come to terms with it. They may be scared of going to a hockey game, or really any game indoors, wondering if there’s going to be another shooting. They’ll jump at anything that sounds like a gunshot. We have idiots in our complex who go out at night and shoot their guns into the air. We *know* what that sounds like. There were gunshots in our building’s breezeway. We know that sound, and it’s not in a public area like a hockey game. No matter how many times they do it, I still jump. The right to own a gun ends when it’s pointed at someone “because they can”. Thoughts and prayers? Hooey. See you soon!

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

  1. Good lord, when will you lefties learn? You continue to call for gun control, how about criminal control & mental health awareness! At least three so called transgender mass shooters in the news recently! The police were called to this dudes frequently the last few years and nobody thought to check if has guns? He obviously has mental illness, why was he allowed to have guns? You don’t punish the law abiding citizens by taking their guns and hoping the criminals give up theirs, duh. You sure as hell don’t “affirm” mental illness by celebrating it.
You say thoughts and prayers do nothing and are lip service, well gun control is futile and would do nothing to stop the criminally insane. Especially when they full intend to go berserk.
