Trump had a chance to be Presidential and simply couldn’t bring himself to do so. During a ceremony to posthumously award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to NYC Volunteer Firefighter Welles Crowther Trumpy just HAD to whine about how Crowther had become more famous. To add insult to injury Trump dropped another turd on the proceeding by following up with “I don’t like it.”
I should know better than to think Trump has gone as low as he can go. Long before I became a Marine I learned the valuable life lesson that no matter how bad things get, they can always get worse. Trump has rewritten the laws of political physics but one long ago became a constant and will remain so: No matter how awful Trump is he will get worse. As this article from People explains he made a point of proving it yet again. In a ceremony meant to honor a true hero who was saving lives while Trump was sitting in his office figuring out how to get some positive PR out of the disaster Trump decided to go throwing turds into the punchbowl.
Let’s step back and take a look at Welles Crowther the young man who was being honored, and who’s family was gathered to receive the highest civilian honor our nation awards on his behalf. The Wikipedia link describes someone who packed a lifetime into just 24 years. People has the short version:
- Welles Crowther, an equities trader and volunteer firefighter, posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his heroic actions on 9/11
- Crowther, remembered as “the man in the red bandana,” saved numerous lives in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks before dying in the South Tower’s collapse
- His family accepted the award on his behalf, honoring his legacy of courage, compassion and selflessness
Keep in mind Trump’s ducking attending the annual 9/11 ceremony in New York because organizers stuck to established policy and wouldn’t let him give a speech. His advance team was given the ‘bad news’ a while back so it makes sense he’d look for another way to grab some 9/11 glory for himself. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Steel Across America” event in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 8 (today) seemed like a way to inject himself into a feel good 9/11 thing. So Trump hosted a ceremony at the White House to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to someone who (unlike Trump) actually earned a high honor. However, Trump is Trump and as the headline says he took a massive dump on the whole affair. Trump can’t stand things NOT being about him/honoring him!
Trump I’m sure got jealous as he read prepared remarks describing Crowther’s heroism. He hates acknowledging others who display courage and true service to others because it’s simply not in his DNA to think about anyone or their well-being other than himself. So he went off his prepared remarks and added disgusting ad libs that ruined what could have and should have been a proud, if bittersweet moment for Crowther’s family and friends. Yes, Trump’s prepared remarks described how Crowther made his way through a damaged stairwell. Encountering a group of people on the 78th floor, many of whome were severely injured and surrounded by smoke and fire Crowther did what Trump would never do. Help them reach safety. He repeatedly made his way through the damaged building, wearing a bandana (something he seems to have always carried since his dad gave him one when he was six years old) over his mouth, helping people who could not escape on their own.
For Trump who hates himself for being a lifelong coward describing yet another person who did things he would NEVER do was just too much. Trump just HAD to ruin the moment so he went off-script with whining and complaining because HE wasn’t the hero everyone was their to honor:
“Today we also remember another hero of 9/11,” Trump said while recounting Crowther’s actions inside the South Tower, according to C-SPAN.
“It was certain they were sure they were going to die. Then suddenly a rescuer appeared. They call him the man in the red bandana. Have you heard that term? The man in the red bandana has become more famous than me. I don’t like it. Very unhappy. But he’s become much more famous than me,” he added.
That’s pure Donald J (for Jagoff) Trump. He couldn’t allow, even for fifteen minutes to be at a gathering that was about honoring someone else! He had the chance to create a beautiful moment but just couldn’t bring himself to be Presidential. No, he had to piss and moan because it dawned on him he wasn’t fit to wash Welles’ red bandana. That the people gathered were there for Welles and not for HIM. Alas, unless Mother Nature finally does her job we are stuck with him for another two years.
I’m both sad, and angry on the Crowther family’s behalf. For the rest of their lives when they think of Welles’ heroism and sacrifice thoughts of Trump complaining will haunt them. I fellow Veteran in my building often comments on Facebook when a post goes up pointing out Trumpian bullshit and he almost always responds with three letters FDT. F**k Donald Trump. I second the sentiment.
