If Trump hadn’t gotten so upset with Senator Ossoff’s “wink, wink, nudge, nudge,” the whole thing with Natalie would have blown over and dropped out of the news. But Trump and the White House just *had* to lose their shizzle over something that was a throwaway, and it’s still in the news. It’s trending. And the more that comes out about Ms. Harp, the more concern we should have, as mentioned by Ursula earlier today. But this is different. This is down here in red, red Georgia. And Ossoff is coming out on top. One of our two Democratic senators is coming out on top again. Trump is going to hate this. Too bad. With a little help from Raw Story:
In a Saturday episode of The Focus Group Podcast, Sarah Longwell said she had to text her team midway through a focus group session to confirm the Georgians she was interviewing were actually voters who backed Trump in 2024. What threw her was how the voters in the focus group disapproved of Trump’s job performance in his second administration and their descriptions of Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA).
That’s actually fairly entertaining! “My state is red but my senators are blue!” Ossoff and “The Rev” Raphael Warnock make a good pair. Both of them are great people. They pulled off quite an upset when they were getting started here. These are people who pay attention. They look at the whole state, not just the major cities. And they genuinely try to help all the people in the state. This group was very unhappy with Trump. Buyer’s remorse? There’s a lot of that going around.
“I like Jon Ossoff. I have voted for him before. I appreciate him because he does fight for the little guy,” one voter told Longwell. “He just really represents the marginalized community very well. He’s always looking out for us.” Another said he knew almost nothing about Collins beyond attack ads. “Everything I see on TV is just really Ossoff or attacking Ossoff,” the voter said. “I don’t really see why Collins is promoting himself.”
Collins is not doing very well at all. It should be getting humiliating by this point. The only ads from him are attacks. Yes, seriously. People are not going to develop an opinion of him except for a bad one. Far be it from us to be unhappy that a Republican is tanking. And Ossoff started his re-election campaign at the end of last year. It’s a pity others didn’t follow his example. We have yet to see a single yard sign or anything of the sort for Collins anywhere. There’s a great big void for Collins. Good.
Cook Political Report’s Amy Walter tied the mood to a broader problem for the GOP. She warned that “their base is exhausted” heading into the midterms and that the “enthusiasm gap is like a chasm right now.”
From everything we’re seeing these days, a lot of Republican voters *are* exhausted. Trump broke his promises. Everything is going up, and not anything good. Inflation, gas, grocery prices, et cetera et cetera. Well, the Iran War is holding “steady”, but everyone hates that.
