The GOP’s Next Long Con Victim Is the GOP Itself

Why is it that every time I see any kind of reporting on the GOP, the Loony Tunes theme song, The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down keeps playing in my head? We have all known for a long time that the GOP will bullshit anybody, anytime, and anywhere if it helps to keep their back alley crap game going. But according to The Washington Post, the GOP is about to take their game to another level. Now they’re actually starting to bullshit their own members.

Here’s how it goes. According to the WaPo reporting, The GOP did internal polling on a large number of key battleground districts that the GOP must either retain, or regain in order to take back the House in 2022. The vast majority of those critical districts showed either competitive or highly competitive races. Good news for the GOP, right? They’re holding their own.

Except maybe not. Because it turns out that there was one cross tab of polling that wasn’t released to the GOP caucus with the rest of the data. And Cave of Wonders! that data showed that in a large number of those critical districts, former President Donald Trump’s popularity is polling severely underwater! Fancy that? You’re doing great just so long as neither you nor anybody else mentions the name Trump.

There could be several reason for this omission, but none of them look very good for the RNC. For instance, it may be a throwback to Trump’s salad days as President, when the Presidential Daily Briefs were scoured of anything that could put him in a bad mood. I tend to think that finding out that GOP voters in critical districts think you suck might put him off of his bacon double cheeseburger. Also, I wouldn’t put it past that sniveling worm Kevin McCarthy to try to hide that kind of info from his caucus, so that he can continue to try to display a unified House caucus, at least until after the Cheney recall vote on Wednesday.

Here’s why this is important. The Democrats retained the House in 2020, but suffered large losses. Most of those were white suburban swing districts that the Democrats flipped in 2018. The majority of those GOP candidates were more moderate, establishment style candidates that white suburban GOP women could vote for while also turfing Trump out of office.

Which means that they are now an endangered species. These are the very same ones that Trump is now supporting primary challengers for. And these are the same ones that Quisling Kevin McCarthy is going to everything in how power to force to make public statements of support for Trump.

Look, any serious candidate, or campaign manager will tell you that the single most critical information to a campaign is accurate polling. Hell, don’t take my word for it, just ask Vlad the Imp. Look at the damage he did with the internal polling Manafort gave him. But if the RNC isn’t going to give their candidates accurate internal polling, then these people are flying blind, if not accidentally sabotaging their own campaigns. And if the GOP forces Trump to become a national issue, then suburban white GOP women sitting out 2022 in disgust doesn’t just restore a solid Democratic House majority, it means that Judas Joe Manchin can go back to being just one more country boy with a bad haircut.
