It has been confirmed through a few different sources, so it’s true. This is honestly painful. So many memories. So many actions. So much has been done. So much accomplished. History should remember her well for all she did. She has so many “best” moments that it’s hard to say what the number one accomplishment was. From Raw Story:
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Thursday she will be retiring from Congress. The 85-year-old San Francisco representative, who served as speaker from 2007-2011 and again from 2019-2023, issued a video detailing the end of her time in politics and thanking her constituents for their trust in her. “I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” she stated. “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative as we go forward.”
Wow. Just … wow. This was honestly a shock. A force of nature is leaving the room. That’s not to say others can’t do the same sort of things she did. They could and they will. But right now, a major factor in Democratic decisions has said, “it’s time to go”. She can step down with a smile and take time to look at things and do them for herself. She can take the time for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.
Pelosi became a towering figure in Democratic Party politics throughout her decades in office, being instrumental to ushering through massive policy achievements ranging from the Affordable Care Act, transforming health insurance to be available to all regardless of pre-existing conditions, to the Inflation Reduction Act, which further reformed the health care system and committed billions of dollars to energy and climate policy dominance.
We know she did a lot, but seeing everything put together like that is startling. She worked to build our country and its people up, unlike, say, Trump, who is bringing it down in hopes of turning our country into his own personal kingdom. But a rant will come out of that, and this is a celebration of Nancy. We have a positive figure to celebrate. Decades. We had her for *decades*. Again, when you look at it like that, it’s just stunning. Wonderful!
She was also a key figure of opposition during the first Trump administration, overseeing two impeachments of the president, and has been notorious as an effective fundraiser for her party. Following the 2022 election, Pelosi stepped down as leader of Democrats in the House, passing the torch to Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). However, she continued to carry a great deal of influence in party decisions behind the scenes as a veteran leader commanding respect from the caucus.
Ah, yes. The impeachments and the wimpiness of the Senate not following through. The impeachments were a personal favorite. It took so much courage to do that. Those will haunt Trump through the rest of his life, from years to months, to “he’s going to pass along soon”. This was so damn hard to write. We’re going to miss her. We’re going to miss this force of nature. We’re going to miss her experience and her keen eye for staying on top of emerging political issues. See you later, Nancy, as you exit stage right. That applause is for you, and well deserved. Thank you for everything.
Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise, among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
