The Best New Thing In The World Today!

This won’t take long. For those of you who know me, you already know that I am no great fan of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. In fact, I can’t stand the guy, for a variety of reasons. But this article isn’t intended to start a pissing contest in the comments, so we’ll just leave it there.

I was just watching The Rachel Maddow Show with Teri, and her alert alarm went off on her phone. It turns out that the alert was from the NFL.com app, and that one alert, from that app, did something that I didn’t think anything on earth could make me do.

The alert said that New England’s coach, Bill Belichick, has decided to decline an invitation to visit the White House, and be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

What? So now, all of a sudden, I have to throw away a lifetime of despising the man, and suddenly like Bill Belichick? Apparently so, and so be it. For all of his shortcomings, Belichick has character, and he understands the importance of certain things. And as Donald Trump stands, totally prepared to hand out Presidential Medals of Freedom at toll booths, Belichick had the moral fiber to stand up and say, Include me out. And who could blame him? Who wants to join the ranks of bottom feeding scumbags like Rush Limbaugh, Devin Nunes, and Him Jordan as the cream of Trump’s crop?

And so I stand properly chastened. It will likely never happen again, but if I manage to bump into Bill Belichick over the next 48 hours, I’ll be the first in line to buy him a beer. Hey it’s a start.

  1. I didn’t like or trust the Lincoln Project folks either. Still don’t trust them completely except for Schmidt. But they stand against Trump just like the coach. That’s enough for me.

  2. *looks at murf*

Nah……he’s still a prick…..he just can’t stand the thought of cold Big Macs, Whoppers and fries with Diet Coke at the luncheon.

    *smirk*

  3. On the flip side, I heard Trump is really pissed. His advisors told him he shouldn’t pardon himself, since that would amount to an admission of doing something wrong and open him up to civil suits out the wazoo. So now, he is not issuing any more pardons to others. Between this and losing twitter and the other site, his blood pressure has to be sky high.

  4. Please tell Ursula that I apologize for almost duplicate comments. The software gave me a syntax error, so I tried changing a few words and it said it again. Now I see that both are in moderation. I didn’t think syntax errors went anywhere. Now I know.

  5. I too don’t like the guy. He’s the second biggest anal orifice in the NFL (Jerry Jones being number 1 in my book) and his palling around with Trump was one more reason to hate him. But I read his statement. And he didn’t stop with making clear why he was declining his medal. He also cited pride in his team working to become more social justice oriented during the past year. I still don’t like him but I’ve gotta give him credit, serious credit when it’s due and it surely is on this one. OTOH as someone who’s love for golf has been steadily eroded in recent years by watching how stars I once thought of as people of character and sportsmanship have not just played rounds with Trump but PRAISED him. Three golfers were slated to get Presidential Medals last week. One of them whose name I forget didn’t show although no reason has been given. But icons (or former ones) Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player had the gall, the INDECENCY and generally tone-deaf bad judgement to show up and accept a medal from the worst President in our history after he’d incited a riot to try and destroy our democracy. For people that pride themselves (as golfers do – in what other sport do top players call penatlies on themselves sometimes? It happens in golf, even in major championships with people who have been in contention!) have a couple of the games universally accepted greats wind up having Bill freaking Belichik show more class and display the ideals of fairness and sportsmanship? Sorenstam and Player need to take a hard look at themselves, and after Biden has been sworn in go to the WH and hand their medals back in with a promise to atone for their misjudgement.

  6. I have no idea who he is, but good for him. Sadly, I have a really good idea who Rush Limbaugh, Devin Nunes & especially Gym Jordan (since I’m from NE Ohio) are so this shows some decency.

  7. I really don’t think this is Belichick, or Kraft. I think this is his players saying “if you do this, don’t come back here expecting anything from us based on words from you, YOU will be persona non grata in this locker room if you bow to Trump”
Now, Joe, what is it you don’t like about Bill. I don’t like him either, but I have no understanding of “why”? I just don’t. But I also know I just don’t like him, like my subconscious is picking up on all kinds of clues that my conscious brain isn’t. PLEASE tell me what my subconscious sees that my conscious is not. You obviously know Joe, so please share.
    Thanks

  8. No worries, all — we can still dislike Bill Belichick if we keep in mind that he waited until after the insurrection to cut his ties with Trump, just like all the other GOP rats deserting the sinking ship. And the same thing goes for Tom Brady!
