Sometimes, It Just Seems Futile

When I joined Politizoom, I promised Ursula Faw, the Grand Poobah of PZ, the Ayatollah of rock-rolla, that I would never submit articles just to fill space on a page. It’s a matter of ethics. If you noble readers are willing to fight through my myriad of typos, the least I could do was to either inform or entertain you, preferably both.

Most of you know well by now that I am an Op-Ed columnist. I don’t ferret out news and report it, I take news that is already out there, put on my elbow length rubber gloves, and sift through the pile of cow shit for that one golden kernel of corn nobody else saw, or that magic mirror that can be rinsed off to show Alice’s looking glass, and present the alternate theory and information to you for your own perusal. What you decide to do with it is up to you. But i seek above all else to both entertain and educate.

With that criteria, you would think I’d be typing like a bastard maniac, churning stuff out 16 hours a day. With everything that has happened in the last week, both leaks being reported as well as excerpts from upcoming and just released books, you’d think that I’m composing these goddamn things in my sleep.

But instead I have suffered a crisis of faith. Not with my God, there’s no problem there. My crisis of faith has to do with the constant, churning influx of the news of the last week. I have searched, and searched, and searched, and there is no there there.

And that’s why I just can’t write about this shit. There literally is no hidden kernel of truth in the bullshit, no magic mirror to look through to find an alternate story or explanation. It is exactly what it looks like. From the revelations in the Atlantic article to the revelations of the Michael Cohen book, to the revelations of the Bob Woodward book, to Trump’s continued lies about the coronavirus. The masks are all off, ladies and gentlemen.

My dear friends, there is no greater truth here. What we are looking at is the pure, unadulterated core of the Trump administration and its GOP enablers. It is a pure, raw, crass use of raw naked political power. The Trump administration and the GOP writ large is a corrupt criminal organization, the laws don’t apply to them because they are capable of manipulating the laws to suit them, and they will stop at nothing. Maya Angelou once said, When they show you what they are, believe them.

And it’s not just me warning you either. Both Frank Figliuzzi, the former counter intelligence  chief of the FBI, as well as Elizabeth Neumann, the former #2 terrorism expert at DHS have already sounded the alarm. They have stated that both the FBI as well as the DHS consider domestic white supremacists, as well as white nationalists as the prime threat to internal security. Both agencies are already trying to form contingency plans for either white nationalist violence heading into the election, or violence between election day and the inauguration. Trump has long ago thrown away the dog whistle, and instead switched to a bull horn to rally the bucket heads and bed sheet wearers to his side. And two departments in our government are already taking this seriously enough to form contingency plans to deal with it.

This is my warning to you. They have finally dropped the masks and shown their own true colors. They will fight however dirty they need to, they will pull whatever tricks, they will subvert every process in order to win. The solution? Fucking vote! Do it however you want, but vote. And make sure that everybody else you know does so too. The DeJoy post office is already blocking members of congress from touring postal facilities in their own districts. The only thing that can offset this Klown Kar Kabal is an overwhelming voter turnout, especially early enough to offset the machinations of DeToy. You’ve been warned.

  1. We have lived to see American politics become very ugly. Pre-Trump, it was not like this. Although, as Obama says, Trump is the symptom, not the problem. The problem is the desire of certain Republicans, who we all know, to stay in power no matter what institutions they shred. Simply incredible.

  2. Thanks for raising our consciousness and keeping us in touch with the truth! I can only hope that we win and those who do not respect the democratic process lose!

  3. Dickens described the world in 2020 pretty well:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we …

    • I prefer the folk poem “Jim Jones” myself for the actual mood of this country: “Now it’s day and night/The irons clang/And like poor galley slaves/We toil and toil/Until our lives/Must fill dishonored graves. But some dark night,/When all’s quiet in the town/I’ll shoot those tyrants one and all/I’ll gun the flogger down. I’ll give the land a little shock/Remember what I say/And they’ll yet regret/They sent Jim Jones/In chains to Botany Bay.”

  4. All the above are the reasons we should feel grateful that their strategies are also antiquated and stupid. By way of for instance, did you know that there was an attempted hack on Joe Biden’s campaign this last week by Fancy Bear, the Russian cutout that got into Hillary’s campaign? Too bad for the latter that Biden’s people were ready for them by way of a cybersecurity firm, so no breach.

THAT fits their pattern of tactics, the so-called “tried and true”. The problem is that we have all seen these stunts and are on the lookout for them this time. Yet they do them anyway because they have nothing better. And that “nothing better” is strictly because a) Trump’s brain is rotting but they leave him in charge and b) no other real leaders exist in the GOP now, not even McConnell.

  5. I’m truly heartsick and exhausted! I have watched this president promote violence and I wish this election was over! I will buy the first gun that I ever owned! I don’t like guns! I am scared by all the trump people! I am white and ashamed by the racist people that trump has made mainstream! They no longer hide under their sheets! They are emboldened by trump’s constant rhetoric! I pray that we don’t have to go to war with our brothers and sister’s! The stakes are high! So vote like your life depends on it because it does!

    • Courage, Mary. The moment we can REALLY start to tip the balance is less than 60 days now. Meantime, I’d encourage everyone to GOTV by whatever means they can. Signed, a fellow ashamed white person.

    • First off, those of you who are afraid of guns DON’T need one. They’re more of a danger to you if you’re not comfortable with them. Secondly, ammo’s pretty hard to get these days. Please keep your minds busy by phone banking, volunteering to be poll greeters, call your local county Democratic Party office to see how you can help. We need tons of people no matter where you are.

      • Yeah, that’s why I got no interest in one myself, Old. But did you ever think white people in this country would be buying guns because they were afraid of OTHER white people?

        • i know what you mean. I can’t do the phone banking and my handwriting’s barely legible most days. Spend most of my time out in a wheelchair and on oxygen. But I can count and bundle slate cards for other volunteers, and have signed up for 8 4-hour shifts as a Poll Greeter starting first of early voting and ending Election day. I have one of those “grabber” things to hand out my slate cards with. We have some great young county party officers, they love me and they help me help. I just miss being their age and doing a lot more.

  6. I’m frequently haunted by a quote from James Michener’s novel Space. An elderly professor of astronomy gives a lecture welcoming his former student/prized pupil back to the university as the chair of the astronomy department. “Professor Anderson” gives his talk in the planetarium where he takes the audience through that incredible supernova almost a thousand years ago which was so bright it could be seen in the daytime sky, rivalling our own sun. Near the end he notes that there is ample record of it at the time it happened, as descriptions can be found all over the world – except in Europe. No mention at all. As he put it the people of Europe lived through the greatest display from the heavens that has been seen in recorded history yet no one saw it – or at least bothered to write it down.

He concluded with: “An age is not called dark because the light fails to shine, but because people refuse to see it” and walked off.

Think about the average conservative voter both here and abroad in other democracies. Their willful refusal to listen to reason, to accept obvious truths. In our own country these people have gained enormous political sway and what they’ve already wrought has damaged, and perhaps even crippled out nation for at least a generation. They simply refuse to see the light so to speak. This creates the conditions where their leaders have an all too realistic chance of extinguishing it altogether and plunging us into a modern version of the Dark Ages.

We have one chance to stop it. One. This election before us is our chance and if we fail to keep the light shining and protect it enough to make it to the next election where we will again have to work hard to keep it shining (and the one after that too) then once again I’ll say that the thing I am most thankful for is that I never had children – who, along with their own descendants would have to live in the world that will become if we fail.

Even though I don’t have children, I intend to do all I can because other people do. The country and world is what we make of it and I want it to be a country and world that’s the way I believe it should be. One that strives to learn, be fair to all, a world where kindness and compassion is the default setting for the average person, and which owns up to shortcomings and strives to do better.

    • I have thought from the beginning that Republicans want not the 1950’s but the middle-ages or maybe-even the dark-ages. I read Space many years ago, but sadly don’t remember much. That story is very very scary. Maybe the scariest thing I have ever heard. Too, perhaps all writings about the event were destroyed. They did destroy the library in Alexandria. They did destroy as much of the Greek writings as they could. Either way it is horrifying.

      • “The four most horrific words in any language are, the library is burning.” I cannot remember who said this but it’s a favorite quote and true.

  7. If you do vote at home and are able to take your ballot to a drop box or take it to your city clerk’s office in person, bypass the post office entirely and screw DeJoy. I wish these other options would be stressed more as alternatives to using the mail.

  8. They’re not leaving us much choice. A whole lot of people need to go to jail, including anyone blocking Senators and Representatives from inspecting postal facilities.
