Bill Cosby was found guilty of rape by a Pennsylvania jury. He spent three years in prison, awaiting his appeal to process. We are lucky we got three years of Cosby in prison. Some judges may have let him wait at home pending an appeal. (Though not likely, it depends on the law in the state). His case was dismissed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and rightly so.

It was dismissed because, in 2005, a Pennsylvania D.A. promised not to prosecute Cosby over the rape allegations so that Cosby could testify truthfully in depositions filed in civil suits. In those civil suits, Cosby admitted to giving women quaaludes so he could rape them (It is all about informed consent, the quaaludes were used to prevent a “No,” by being so out of it.) The woman got a $3.28 million settlement.

A new D.A. prosecuted Cosby on the premise that the promise was personal and he didn’t have to abide by that promise. Then, to make it worse, the prosecutors used the deposition material as evidence in Cosby’s case. I would have voted to overturn the case and before you get mad, think about all the havoc it could cause if prosecutors could promise and someone else 18 months later “unpromise.” It would be unworkable, and had Cosby known that the promise wouldn’t last forever, he likely would’ve taken the Fifth.

All of the above is a way of saying that despite the fact that Cosby’s case was rightly overturned, it doesn’t mean he’s not a rapist by his own admission in the deposition. The man who admitted to raping women by dosing them is going on tour in 2023, presumably to make people, including women, laugh. From Yahoo Entertainment:

Bill Cosby is eyeing a return to touring in 2023. The controversial comedian said as much during a surprise Dec. 28 radio interview on “WGH Talk” with host Scott Spears. Cosby answered “yes” when asked if 2023 was the year he finally might be able to tour again.

Cosby, now 85, was convicted in Pennsylvania in April 2018 of a criminal sex assault charge. He was released in 2021 following nearly three years in prison after the conviction was overturned by the state Supreme Court.

I cannot imagine a reputable place allowing him to perform. Again, even though I am absolutely certain that I would’ve voted to free Cosby, I sure wouldn’t let him perform in my club. I also cannot imagine who wants to pay to see him. Can he make anyone laugh at this point?

  1. Given his age it’s possible he would have died in prison. That would have been best given the law and how his cluster-fuck prosecution worked out. I get what you’re saying about the legalities but that doesn’t mean the law doesn’t suck sometimes. I also hope that no decent venue will book him, and that ticket sales don’t cover his expenses to appear. Let the asshole do the warmup for Trump rallies.
