The whole world, especially the punditry world is aflutter with Vlad the Imp’s pronouncement that he was placing his nuclear forces on high alert. Following the credo of my patron saint, Jon of Stewart, If you smell bullshit, call bullshit, I’m calling bullshit.

This was a pure exercise of Putin licking his nuts. As virulent of a despot as Putin is, I find it impossible to believe that the Russian military didn’t follow in the steps of the western powers, and putting into place failsafes for the actual launching of nukes. And I find it impossible to believe that senior Russian officers would agree to launch tactical nukes against Ukraine, and assure their own self destruction. Especially when Russian soldiers are throwing down their arms and refusing to kill Ukrainians.

Look, Putin is a man on the razors edge. He will be 70 on 9 October, and being isolated in the Kremlin for two years has given him too much time to ponder his historical legacy. And Putin considers his legacy to be reconstructing the glory of the former USSR empire. And as a result, Putin has lashed out against his crown jewel, the Ukraine, and now he’s getting his ass kicked. And now he’s sitting alone in his office, besieged, and he’s acting out.

Sound familiar? How about Trump, sitting in the Oval Office on November 7th, when he found out that he had just officially lost reelection. Trump was well aware of his minimal activities, and his personal exposure, and he was about to lose the only shield he had, the presidency. And as a result, Trump intensified his Stop the Steal campaign, and even engineered an insurrection against his own government to stop the electoral college tally, and stay in power.

Welcome to Vladimir Putin’s world. He made a disastrous decision to invade the Ukraine, and now he’s getting his ass kicked. And while Putin may be insane and paranoid, he’s also inherently a political creature. Of Russia. And as such, he full well knows that a weak leader is a vulnerable leader, Abd Putin didn’t get where he is by swearing undying allegiance to anybody. He is now in mortal risk.

Just like Trump before him, Putin is going to fight like hell to maintain his own personal control. But while Trump had government officials devoted to the constitution, and not to him personally, Putin is going to have ambitious junior officers looking to advance their own careers. Whose fucked worse? Personally, I think they’re both fucked!

  1. That’s it, Murf, this right here. I just finished reading this informative Twitter thread by Kamil Galeev on why he’s certain Russia is about to lose. At the tail end of it, he spoke of the mythological component blinkering people to reality (he uses the example of the 1572 burning of Moscow, where a hail of arrows killed the homegrown myth of Ivan The Terrible’s boys being gods among men because they had guns). Both Putin and too many analysts are letting themselves get lost in a myth about Russia that is disproven every day Ukraine stands.

  2. Putin is a putz. As is his best friend. Narcissists that have no conscience by definition, have no real allies. The only opinion they value is their own. Hard to get a realistic appraisal of anything looking into the mirror constantly. Maybe if they both took off their shirts and rode horses charging the Ukrainian line, they could restore their divine right as kings. Of course putin would want the bigger horse & frump would need a body stocking for flab containment.
