Before Trump’s boat sinks completely, this is actually somewhat of a surprise. We had a lot of warning for a few, like Mitch McConnell. But others? Not so much. There isn’t an easily available list at the moment, so we need to do some digging. That’s a nice little project. It could be both fun and eye-opening. We shall see. My gratitude to Raw Story:

More congressional Republicans have quit, declined to seek reelection, or jumped to different races than in any year since President Donald Trump’s last midterm catastrophe, according to a new analysis, and the president’s historic approval rating collapse may explain why. At least 39 GOP lawmakers have headed for the exits, Slate’s Ian Prasad Philbrick reported Friday, a number that rivals the 2018 Republican exodus when Trump’s first-term unpopularity helped Democrats seize the House in a wave election.

My, my, my. That’s quite a few of the “rats” deserting the ship. Now I definitely have to go on a quest for names. Trump’s approval continues to plummet, and it’s dragging the Republican Party down with it. The more senators who retire, the more chances we have of flipping Congress. Wouldn’t it be grand if we could actually impeach him and make it stick? [And Kilauea is expected to erupt within the next 24 to 36 hours. It’s on YouTube.]

The flight comes as Trump’s approval rating has cratered below 40 percent for the first time in his second term, driven largely by the Iran war and its punishing economic falloutMultiple polling averages now show surveys from CNN, YouGov, the Associated Press, and Quinnipiac University putting his support in the 30s. Independent, nonwhite, and younger voters who broke for Trump in 2024 have since soured on him. Even Republicans are giving him poor marks on the economy, a marquee issue that helped propel him back to the White House.

Yep. The economy has tanked because of all of Trump’s shenanigans. Now add in the war. We can pretty much figure we’re going into a depression. This is disturbing. We’ve been through one recently, from December 2007 to June 2009. We don’t need another. But there’s no choice. The war is going to tip the country over the edge. Thanks, Trump, you jerk!

Trump is now underwater in more than half the states he won in 2024, including all seven swing states he regularly brags about having swept. Democrats currently lead the generic congressional ballot by around 6 points, and have flipped seats in special elections throughout the year. As Philbrick noted dryly: “Sometimes those who can’t raise their voices vote with their feet instead.”

Oof and well said! Vote with their feet. That doesn’t help Democrats, but it doesn’t hurt either. One less Republican vote is nothing to sneeze at. We really need to flip *all* of Congress. Right now, I just wish they would get the bill passed for DHS without the extra funding for ICE. Our TSA workers and others definitely need to be paid. Remember, the World Cup will be starting soon, assuming they can get into the country, teams, staff, and fans. My NYC friends told me that a ton of hotel rooms are being cancelled. We’re losing that money, thanks to Trump and DHS. Well done, idiots. Well done.

See you soon!

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
