Now *this* was a surprise. Not only did he come back into the public eye, but he also talked about Trump. It was a bit veiled, but nevertheless, he did it. I don’t think he’s *ever* said anything like this. To come out and say without saying that El Presidente Imbécil is leading our country down a dark path? Well, then. From MSNBC:

Former President Barack Obama has issued a warning about the future of American democracy, cautioning that the country is “dangerously close” to normalizing behavior consistent with autocracies.” Speaking Tuesday night in Hartford, Connecticut, he offered thinly veiled criticism of President Donald Trump and questioned the administration’s commitment to democracy.

“What we’re seeing right now … is not consistent with American democracy,” he continued. “It is consistent with autocracies. It is consistent with Hungary under Orbán. It’s consistent with places that hold elections but do not otherwise observe what we think of as a fair system in which everybody’s voice matters and people have a seat at the table, and nobody’s above the law. We’re not there yet completely, but I think that we are dangerously close to normalizing behavior like that.”

And how many of us have been screaming about this very thing? How many of us have *noticed* something is wrong? And how are we going to change this? Our elected Congresspeople would be the answer. I don’t know if there’s any hope for, specifically, the House of Representatives, to listen, and stop rolling over for Agent Orange. Let’s hope that some of them will have the nerve to speak up with the Democrats, and thusly to get a majority against the Cheeto Prophet’s herd of lapdogs.

Congress needs to grow a spine. Congress needs to remember that they are 1/3 of our government. They share the responsibility for the country with the judicial and executive branches. They share the responsibility. The current majority of Congress has forgotten that. If they can’t stand the heat, GTFO of Congress. More from Barack on MSNBC:

Speaking just days after millions of Americans demonstrated against Trump in the nationwide “No Kings” protests, Obama praised the pushback from individuals outside of government, but stressed that elected officials need to do more to protect American institutions. “There also have to be people in government in both parties who say, ‘No, you can’t do that,’” the former president said.

Obama said the only way to protect the future of democracy — and the United States — is for the American people to work together: When people actually meet and get to know each other … what Lincoln called those ‘better angels’ come out. People start recognizing themselves in each other and they start trusting each other, and that’s not just the basis for democracy, but that’s the basis for our long-term salvation.

Our salvation. What a fantastic way to say it. We need our salvation, and it’s not Trump. Our salvation is in front of us. We just need to reach out and grab it. Let’s do this and do it NOW.  Thanks for sticking with me!

We thank all of you who have donated. You’re keeping this blog on the internet, believe me. One of the battles we fight is the inconsistency of ad revenue because politics in this country is so polarized, and a lot of advertisers just seek to avoid the political. They’d rather advertise on food blogs and be safe, doughnuts before democracy. All we’re trying to do is stay in business because we believe the work is important. Thank you if you can assist. If we didn’t need it, we wouldn’t be asking. Ursula

    • How do you scream when you don’t know who to scream at? I think all of the Pz writers, and all of you who are our readers (well, except for my ongoing troll) have known about this since the day tRump took office and all those damn EOs. I appreciate the additional article! Time to go read it 🙂

    • WOW. I wish I had read that before replying. It’s even more disturbing than I thought it would be. Laying *everything* out on the line, whoa. That’s a powerful article. I wish I’d known about it when I was writing this column. But, what’s done is done. THank you again!
