We are in quite the quandary now. Elon Musk and his sidekick Vivek Ramaswamy have formed DOGE, the purpose of which is to slash government spending, and by a lot. We’re talking trillions here. But strangely enough, Musk is now propagandizing the wonder of a “new” CR which he wants to see adopted — and which raises the debt ceiling. So how, you ask, can you raise the debt ceiling and cut government spending dramatically? Listen, if I had the answer to that, I would be the next Speaker of the House Of Representatives. Interesting that the can just got kicked down the road to January 30, 2027. It’s almost as if Trump knew that he wouldn’t have the House that year. Not that you need to be Nostradamus to see that shaping up on the horizon.
So does no debt ceiling mean that Elon can take all the money he wants for Space X? Again, who knows? These developments are moving faster than a hummingbird’s wings. All that is known for sure is that you can’t shut down the government a couple of days before Xmas and then go home to your constituents and tell them all about it — and get reelected.
Remember, this is the House, two year terms. People are always working on reelection in the House. Elon doesn’t get that. Elon has never compromised. He’s always had a my way or the highway kind of working style and that might work in his field but in politics that attitude is deadly. Politics is all about compromise.
Let me just throw in a financial tidbit that is related to all this. The Dow Jones has been down ten days in a row. Maybe Trump hitting the starting bell was the proverbial kiss of death. This hasn’t happened in about fifty years. So there is some nervousness where the financial markets are concerned. And this is happening on the eve of Trump’s “golden age” of MAGA.
One month from tomorrow Trump gets sworn in. Expect the chaos to ramp up from there. This has been the whackiest transition yet. Don’t expect that to change. And everybody is waiting to see if Trump does another American Carnage speech or if he has something else in mind.
