Between the wretched weather forecast for this weekend, with a possibility of snow on Sunday, plus the fact that the football playoff game is happening between Ohio State and Notre Dame on Inauguration night, precious few people are headed to Washington or will be watching the Inaugural balls on TV. This tweaks Donald Trump something fierce, needless to say. The last time he was sworn into office he boasted about the crowd being “the largest in history” and this time he won’t even bother. There is no way he can support that ruse, most especially if it snows Sunday and people have to trudge through snowdrifts. Thank heavens Trumpty has moved the ceremony inside, we wouldn’t want him getting pneumonia like President Harrison did.
President Ronald Reagan was inaugurated and sworn in on both the warmest and coldest Jan. 20s, per the NWS.
- His 1981 inauguration was at 55ºF with mostly cloudy skies. His second ceremony in 1985 had to be held indoors because of 7ºF temperature at noon.
President William Henry Harrison developed pneumonia from the weather on his Inauguration Day in 1841 and died a month later, the NWS reported.
- He rode a horse to and from the Capitol without a hat or overcoat and delivered an hour and 40 minute long speech.
President William Taft’s 1909 ceremony was forced indoors because of a storm that brought 10 inches of snow to D.C.
- “It took 6,000 men and 500 wagons to clear 58,000 tons of snow and slush from the parade route,” per the NWS.
President Franklin Roosevelt’s second ceremony holds the record rainfall for the date at 1.77 inches.
- “At the president’s insistence, he rode back to the White House in an open car with a half an inch of water on the floor,” NWS said. “Later, he stood for an hour and a half in an exposed viewing stand watching the inaugural parade splash by in the deluge.”
These former presidents had a lot more mettle than Trump, needless to say. And a lot less ego. The purpose of an Inauguration is two fold, one, the actual swearing in of the president, and two, it’s party time. Trump couldn’t care less about the solemnity of the occasion other than that it gets a lot of eyeballs on him but the party time aspect of it is very important. He doesn’t want to be out on the dance floor doing his stupid YMCA gyrations unless all eyes are on him, and with a major sports matchup happening the same night, that isn’t going to happen.
For you see, a lot of people are tuning out this Inauguration not just to watch a ball game but because they wouldn’t watch or attend the Inauguration even with no ball game.
There’s an old saying, “Begin as you intend to proceed.” In this instance, all factors are working against Trump and he’s beginning with the least fanfare of any president taking office due to the weather and the ballgame. And he deserves it. The chickens are coming home to roost for Donald. Nothing is working out the way he planned. That may very well be the template for this administration.

I mean, for a guy who so appeals to the folks who love to “own the libs,” Trump is certainly coming off as one great big snowflake (pun intended?).
We ALL know if Kamala Harris were to be taking the oath of office on Monday and made sensible changes to the entire inauguration because of weather issues, the MAGAts would be howling about “shows that women can’t handle a little bad weather” but when it’s THEIR side? Not a word.
