This one is a doozy. They grabbed a woman coming out of a courtroom. (No, she is not the woman in the picture.) We’ve seen a lot of that, which really sucks because they are grabbing people who are *trying* to become citizens. They’re sitting ducks. They have nowhere to go. They couldn’t stay in the courtroom all day. Other cases have to be attended to. But this one infuriates me even more. With recognition to Raw Story:
Reactions were mounting on Monday as news surfaced about an incident involving two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who tackled a rape survivor to the ground just moments after she testified in a New Jersey courtroom. David J. Bier, Cato Institute Director of Immigration Studies, shared an excerpt from an Atlantic report on X about an incident last year involving a woman who had survived rape and told her story in court about her perpetrator and ex-boyfriend, who she was seeking a restraining order against after he put her in a chokehold and sexually assaulted her, causing her to lose consciousness. When she stepped outside the courthouse, she was suddenly tackled to the ground by two plainclothes ICE officers.
She was a *rape survivor*. She was walking. They tackled her. Why? Two agents against one unprepared woman. They could have used one agent instead of two, and knocking her to the ground was beyond excessive. What were they trying to prove? It did nothing but make them look, once again, like bullies. It had to have frightened the daylights out of her, especially coming after she testified!
Several public figures and prominent voices online spoke out in response. “Insane misogynist military cosplay,” actor and activist Carrie Coon wrote on X. //// “This regime is evil,” Matt Kovach, economist at the Purdue Daniels School of Business, wrote on X. //// “Mass deportations make us all less safe, as abusers and exploiters know that threats to call ICE will keep their victims silent,” Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, wrote on X. //// “Abolish ICE,” Mehdi Hasan, founder and CEO of news outlet Zeteo, wrote on X.
There are definitely times I wish I were on X, because of some people that I highly respect. I should be. But I honestly don’t want to go down that rabbit hole. I have enough trouble keeping track of things as it is. Actions like this make me furious. There is NO consideration for people. ICE treats them as bodies to be dragged around and up the numbers for the day. This one in particular hits home. Courtrooms are terrifying enough, let alone being brave enough to face someone as she did. More power to her.
Mullin is already in the saddle and already talking nonsense. He’s making not-so-subtle threats. He does not think things through. He won’t put a harness on ICE and get them to dial back. No such luck because he’s another moron. ICE will continue with “business as usual”. And we’ll see more of this happening. She did not deserve that, any of it. Hope she’ll be okay.
See you soon!
Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of elderly, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
