Kevin McCarthy said that Donald Trump bore “some responsibility” for the insurrection at the Capitol and that is apparently not all that he said to Trump or about him. It got pretty hot and heavy. If there’s any question about Trump’s state of mind when the riot was going on, this story should clear that up. CNN:

“He is not a blameless observer, he was rooting for them,” a Republican member of Congress said. “On January 13, Kevin McCarthy said on the floor of the House that the President bears responsibility and he does.”
Speaking to the President from inside the besieged Capitol, McCarthy pressed Trump to call off his supporters and engaged in a heated disagreement about who comprised the crowd. Trump’s comment about the would-be insurrectionists caring more about the election results than McCarthy did was first mentioned by Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, a Republican from Washington state, in a town hall earlier this week, and was confirmed to CNN by Herrera Beutler and other Republicans briefed on the conversation.
“You have to look at what he did during the insurrection to confirm where his mind was at,” Herrera Beutler told CNN. “That line right there demonstrates to me that either he didn’t care, which is impeachable, because you cannot allow an attack on your soil, or he wanted it to happen and was OK with it, which makes me so angry.”
“We should never stand for that, for any reason, under any party flag,” she added, voicing her extreme frustration: “I’m trying really hard not to say the F-word.” […]
“Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” Trump said, according to lawmakers who were briefed on the call afterward by McCarthy.
McCarthy insisted that the rioters were Trump’s supporters and begged Trump to call them off.
Trump’s comment set off what Republican lawmakers familiar with the call described as a shouting match between the two men. A furious McCarthy told the President the rioters were breaking into his office through the windows, and asked Trump, “Who the f–k do you think you are talking to?” according to a Republican lawmaker familiar with the call.
Trump didn’t care who he was talking to. Mike Lee, Tommy Tuberville, whoever he butt dialed. This was just his latest improvised skit du jour in four years of skits, using federal personnel, troops, what have you as props in his political theater. And on this occasion he had crowds of extras, all there to do his bidding. Trumple B. DeMille.
What is truly pathetic here is that McCarthy had it right the first time that this was Trump’s doing and then he went down to Mar-a-Lago and played lap dog. Interesting thing about Republicans and spines, the minute you think they’ve grown one…nah, false alarm. And if you’re wondering about souls, they don’t have those either. McCarthy sold his to the Mango Monarch a few days after the insurrection.

  1. Either he didn’t care, which is impeachable, because you cannot allow an attack on your soil, or he wanted it to happen and was OK with it, (which is also impeachable).

So you impeach him on either acts of commission or acts of omission, or both.

  2. It doesn’t take much imagination to know what happened once McCarthy was in the room with Trump down in FL. At least not if one is into dark and twisted humor like I happen to be. It’s really quite simple. McCarthy got played. Trump called someone into the room and ordered them to send a BIG check (like a half million) to McCarthy’s PAC and said see? The check is in the mail. Now be a good boy and finish up this blowjob – I promise I won’t cum in your mouth! Two promises made and I’m sure two broken.

I keep thinking back to Murfster’s theory on why we didn’t do so well in down ballot races and the more I think about it the more I think he’s on to something important. Trump nationalized the 2018 midterms wanting (of course) it to be all about him and he got his ass handed to him. Murfster pointed out that all those disaffected suburban Republicans (and not just women) who were fed up with Trump and wanted to send him a message in 2018 “came home” last November in down ballot races because they could vote against Trump directly. What’s telling though is that we pulled out wins in BOTH GA special elections for those Senate seats.

Sadly, the GOP is likely to let Trump off the hook instead of ripping off the ugly orange band-aid and giving themselves time to work the GOP base. Trump will be lurking, making noise and stoking his hard core followers and threatening to blow up the GOP and the country. But those Republicans (and newly minted Independents who are still really Republicans) will, if we play our cards right wind up punishing Trump and the GOP by swinging our way again in 2022!

The GOP is right to fear Trump’s influence which unless he’s bankrupt or in jail (and if that happens by the time cases get to trial it will be at the WORST possible time for the GOP) but not if they take it upon themselves to throw him under the bus and right now. They are in a maze and at a dead end, but with thin enough shrubs to be able to see an exit one row over. A row they passed on the way into the one they are in! All they have to do is backtrack a bit and the exit will be right there! But they are sooooo afraid of looking “weak” for not being able to magically get out of the maze by making the wall of shrubs in front of them disappear they can’t bring themselves to take advantage of the obvious solution. It might be a long walk backtracking and taking the route out and I guess they are afraid they will trip and fall over a creeping vine and injure themselves so badly they can’t walk. All they can see is the text on their phone from Trump telling them to stay where they are and HE and HE ALONE will rescue them. Suckers. Really stupid suckers!
