My god. What in the hell is going on here? ICE has brought someone on board, and it’s not good. It’s bad. It’s horrifying. It’s right up ICE’s alley. We should absolutely worry. ICE and its brutality are bad enough. But now? It’s getting worse. Regards to The Guardian via, and thank you to Raw Story:
President Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement has hired a contractor who was allegedly involved in torturing inmates at Guantanamo Bay, and news of the hire left a legal expert aghast on Sunday.
The Guardian reported that ICE has hired MVM Inc, a U.S.-based contractor, to assist in tracking down immigrant children who are in the country. A document reviewed by the outlet reveals that the contractor’s job is to “confirm the children’s location, school enrollment and overall wellness, including checking for signs of abuse or trafficking.”
Yea no. It’s going to track them to deport them, and the parents won’t matter. It’s worse than the separation at the border because if they snatch a child and send them away, all the family will know is that their child disappeared. They won’t know where the child is and if s/he is even alive. Add in the words “torturing inmates,” and they really, really, really won’t know anything.
“It’s really deplorable,” Michael Lukens, the executive director of the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights, told the outlet. “It’s really concerning.”
Michael Popok, a lawyer and host of the podcast “The Intersection with Michael Popok,” was aghast on Sunday as he reacted to the report in a new episode.
“Looks like Immigration and Customs Enforcement is in the torture of children business,” Popok said.
THAT is the problem. How will anyone know if their child is being tortured? No one. And what’s to say there aren’t people in that company who would torture a kid because they could? Regretfully, there are people who would. They’re supposed to check the children for signs of abuse, but what do you want to bet that doesn’t count if the child is in their hands? Yes, I could be overreacting, but this doesn’t just concern me; it makes me worry. I could be assuming too much. But the possibility is still out there.
” At the core of bad and inhumane policy by the Trump administration, there are contractors and vendors that we need to call out,” he added.
“There are people making a profit, exploiting the suffering of other human beings.”
“How many heartbreaking scenes do we have to see about ICE and people working for ICE taking preschoolers and 5-year-olds away from their families, or using them as props, as human shields to get the parent to open the door without a warrant to take them away?” Popok added. “Where does it end?“
Where does it end, indeed? We have no answers. There’s no control over ICE, and Mullin is going to ignore it, or even give them tacit permission to be worse. We already know there are agents who happily abuse people, in a different way from the company, when they grab them. Look at the Alex Pretti footage. Look at the handicapped woman who was dragged from her car. Look at everything we have on record from all the people who chose to film, instead of running.
But we can’t record anything once someone gets taken into an ICE building. We need to watch for this and do whatever we can to prevent the children from being grabbed away from their parents, or the parents from being grabbed, leaving children at home.
I firmly believe this is something to worry about. We need to pay attention. We need to look for children as best we can. And we need to watch for anyone with signs of torture being released. It might be hidden from view, but the person knows what happened, and that’s a start, too. Let’s hope they *are* released.
