[That ghastly picture you see up top is an artist’s rendering of the Trump concept for the UFC match. Ugh.]
Yeah, he does pick the most inopportune times, doesn’t he? We’ve all seen it happen more than once, so we’ll skip merrily along. There’s this interesting piece on Raw Story – as a matter of fact, they’re all interesting. And this has given us our Late Late Night for today.
As you can see from the title, it’s all about this thing he has planned for outside on the White House lawn. The lawn is going to be devastated. They won’t put down any plywood to protect it, and here we went on a digression. Your writer here knows about such things.
But there’s a lot going on these days. There’s enough that it already looks bad, this UFC Event he’s planning. And why is it already beginning to look bad? Let’s find out. Many thanks to, of course, Raw Story:
President Donald Trump’s unprecedented Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, event is scheduled to kick off on June 14, but political writer Myra Adams warned Friday that the event may very well end up occurring “at the worst possible moment.”
“For numerous reasons, this UFC event is visually inappropriate and ill-timed.
First, historically, the White House grounds have been associated with peaceful endeavors, such as cultural, educational and humanitarian events, especially during special occasions,” Adams wrote in an op-ed published Friday in The Hill.
Yes, none of us were thrilled when he announced this thing. As a matter of fact, we were *under*whelmed. There is so much wrong with this that it’s a challenge to figure out where to start. We can begin with *on the White House lawn*. Something like this absolutely does not need to be on the lawn next to the White House. It’s just wrong. But then, Trump is known for wrong. Is the next president going to have to fix that, too?
“These activities foster national wellbeing and inspire patriotism among young Americans.
For Trump to proudly host bloody fights on the White House lawn is contrary to his role and to the example he should set of upholding American ideals.”
The date of the UFC event will coincide with both Flag Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the adoption of the United States’ flag, as well as Trump’s 80th birthday.
The date may also inadvertently coincide with something far more serious, Adams warned.
Flag Day, too? Well, now, that’s just a disgrace. His birthday, yeah, whatever, but Flag Day? That’s an insult. It’s disgraceful. But then, ad nauseam, Trump is a disgrace. It’s irksome to have that event on the day it coincides with the adoption of the American flag. Blood on the White House Lawn, just what we wanted to celebrate. Oh hail no! It’s all a charade anyhow. Yes, real blood sometimes does get spilled, but otherwise it’s all planned out in advance. That makes it both easier and harder to watch, that it *is* faked.
“As the June 14 date approaches, with the arena built and press coverage growing, Americans will be more aware of this unorthodox event.
A wild card for Trump is the status of the war in Iran,” she wrote.
“If our military is actively engaged in combat operations, this UFC event will occur at the worst possible moment, when real, not staged, fights are underway, and casualties are inevitable.
In that scenario, might the optics be so distasteful that Trump will be pressured to cancel his UFC Flag Day birthday fight?”
Dare we hope? I have no earthly idea. He’s been pretty callous about a whole lot of things, that is, anything other than himself. And we don’t know what state his mind is going to be in at that, either. The answer has to be maybe, to wait and see. Trump is absolutely UNpredictable these days. We won’t know til we know.
See you tomorrow!
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
