One would think that after a year as Press Secretary, she would have learned how to keep her composure. But, apparently not. She went all out in the first press conference since the USA and Israel attacked Iran. She did not make a good showing. It would have been preferable for her to try to not laugh, as previously seen, than go on this raging offensive. She does pretty well at twisting words and meanings, though. With thanks to Raw Story:
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered an attack on the media on Wednesday during the first press briefing since the U.S. launched its military operation against Iran five days ago. NBC News senior White House correspondent Garrett Haake asked Leavitt why President Donald Trump, just days after his State of the Union address, had not laid out the case for why the U.S. had planned with its ally Israel to launch military strikes on Iran. Leavitt blamed the press for conflicting reports over the Trump administration’s objectives in the military action and what prompted the attacks.
That’s a bit of an extreme reaction. It was a simple, straightforward question that needed only a simple, direct answer. How in the hell could the media put out conflicting reports anyhow? Trump was supposed to be America First. Instead, he got us into a war. Why? Why didn’t he say anything at the SOTU, and why did he attack? What caused him to make that major decision? Israel wanted our help? Would it knock Epstein out of the news? If so, that part didn’t work. Does he want to show off the might of the US military (and get us into yet another never-ending war)?
“Does the president believe the country supports the actions that he’s taken so far in Iran?” Haake asked. Leavitt responded to the question with a swipe at the media, including the reporters at the briefing. “I think he does. And I think the president knows the country is smart enough to read past many of the fake news headlines produced by people in this room, that this action was unjustifiable,” Leavitt said.
Wheee. Defensive much? Trump doesn’t give a damn about what the country thinks. He did it because he could. And he didn’t *think* about all the US bases in countries neutral in the war would be attacked. Big mistake. That’s going to piss off the people in those countries who want no part of this. But it appears the war will be coming to those countries, too. That leads to an even bigger mess. It potentially allows places like China and North Korea to get away with things because we aren’t paying attention. And yes, “things” is a generalization. There are a lot of them, North Korea with its missiles and China with Taiwan, to start.
“Again, this is a rogue terrorist regime that has been threatening the United States, our allies, and our people for 47 years,” Leavitt argued. “And the American people are smart enough to know that. And they’ve also been smart enough to listen to the president himself, not just over the past year in this second term, but during his first term as president and also for the past 40 years of his life. This is a president who has been remarkably consistent on this issue, that Iran can never obtain a nuclear weapon. And the president tried peace through diplomacy exhaustively and extensively. He and his team gave it their best go.”
Pardon me while I gag. “Gave it their best go.” If I remember correctly, and I may not, there was already a treaty in place with Iran agreeing to use enriched uranium for science and power, not nukes. There was no NEED for a war. And they are right to be pissed off. Yes, seriously. In a way, I’m surprised to be speaking of Iran like this, because it is Not A Nice Place, but geez. So we are in a war we did not want. What next?
See you soon!
Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
