Impeachment: Comer To Switch From Hearings To Sleaze Campaign

Ok, so the whole impeachment of Biden process is sleaze. So has been the preceding nonsense in Comer’s House Oversight and Jordan’s Judiciary Committees. However, after breaking his promise (was anyone surprised?) about process and having a formal House vote to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Biden former Speaker McCarthy gave the go-ahead. Of course, back when McCarthy promised a vote of the full House he couldn’t be sure he had the votes. No matter. One way or another he knew he’d have to allow impeachment crap or lose his gavel so he authorized it. And eventually lost his gavel anyway as well all know.

In any case, House GOPers or the Free-Dumb Caucus as least was chomping at the bit. Never mind the flops both Oversight and Judiciary committee hearings had been. Yes, they flopped and there was grumbling from House Republicans about how badly. But NOW things would be different! This time they really, REALLY had good stuff that would make compelling TV and make the J6 Committee look like rank amateurs. Of course, if you followed it that first hearing was as USA Today reported a nothing-burger. In fact Comer and his fellow Republicans did a collective face-plant. They had nothing going in and Democrats were as you’d expect not only aware of that but prepared to rake them over the coals.

Comer’s been licking his wounds ever since. For him the McCarthy debacle and the worse one that followed took attention of his and other Republican’s on the committee’s failure. Not being a complete idiot Comer has realized two things. There’s never been any actual “there” there with the Biden’s and for all the bluster none will be found. Yes, he and others can try to wing it and just makes up stuff but the marks on his hind-end well-prepared Democrats gave him are still visible. And still hurt. HIS people don’t have the work-ethic or discipline Democrats to and the odds of any future hearing turning out any better than that first disaster are slim and none.

So, as this article from MeidasTouch Network explains Comer has decided on a new strategy. Again, as this article notes that first impeachment hearing was a disaster for both Comer and the GOP. It goes on to more or less say that Comer is reluctant to risk further humiliation which he seems to believe if not just possible but probable. And he’s gone on the record about his reluctance to have more hearings:

A new piece in The Washington Post written by Philip Bump, which dissects new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) plans to continue the sham impeachment inquiry into the President, notes that Comer recently told Capitol Hill reporters, “I don’t know that I want to hold any more hearings, to be honest with you.”

The WaPo author wrote of Comer’s whining about the time required for hearings what with all the other commitments members have:

Bump notes, “He complained that it was hard to keep members present for hours on end, given that so many had other commitments. Instead, he said, he preferred depositions, which “you can do more with.””

I don’t seem to recall the members of the January 6 Committee falling behind in their other work as they put in that incredible effort we saw play out both on TV and in their published report. So, as the article states GOPers are going to go a different route, a sleazy one and leak cherry-picked information from those depositions and grab headlines in RWNJ news outlets. Yes, Democrats will debunk them but you know the old saying about a lie traveling around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes.

The whole impeachment thing, like the Oversight and Judiciary committee’s farce hearings is about one thing and one thing only. Tarnishing President Biden in any way possible and if it takes using his son or other family members to “get him” via “guilt by being related” then by god that’s what they will do. No, the hypocrisy of Trump family members who have committed actual crimes and fraud is something they will ignore.

Sadly, the GOP has used the through every bit of made up crap they can dream up at someone successfully. Just ask Hillary Clinton. McCarthy himself admitted back then the whole point of Gowdy’s effort was to tar and feather her and sure enough he solid approval ratings when she stepped down as Secretary of State took a nosedive by the time the 2016 race took shape. Yes, they engaged in some of this (Trump especially) in 2020 against Biden but it didn’t “take.” However, they’ve had extra years and now control of the House with a couple of Committee Chairs who are bat-sh*t insane.

If you think what they’ve made up so far is bad you ain’t seen anything yet. With subpoena power, and their willingness to even conduct interviews and withhold transcripts from Democrats already established this is going to get really ugly. At least we’ve got some awesome Democrats on those committees who will be out there countering the lies.

Comer knows the GOP can’t put on a compelling hearing. They are a combination of lazy and incompetent and know Democrats will hand them their asses. Worse, while Fox and other outlets won’t show their face-plants everyone else will and it will both motivate Democrats and drive Independents (which will include some old-school Republicans who left the GOP due to what it’s become) into our arms.

The bottom line is that when it comes to impeachment, hearings are out and a sleaze campaign is in.
