Recently a certain Congressperson gave a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and parts of it were what you would expect … and parts of it certainly weren’t! This is someone who was a strong leader, and chose to step down, because he felt it was time to do so.

Mitch McConnell showed that he is not pleased with a certain President – WITHOUT saying his name AT ALL. Now THAT is a sign of a true orator. But then he’s had lots of practice. Sometimes they are long, sometimes they aren’t.  But he’s VERY good. He can say pretty much what he wants. Of course, he’s being careful.

These two people had a falling out over the J6 insurrection and it’s definitely not been the same ever since. He hadn’t spoken to tRump for a number of months after that happened. He’s said some other things to show he’s unhappy. Apparently, he *did* finally speak to him but that could have been because he had no escape. So, they’re on speaking terms, but it’s very impersonal and quiet, and quick. Mitch said “The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people.”

“Within the party Ronald Reagan once led so capably, it is increasingly fashionable to suggest that the sort of global leadership he modeled is no longer America’s place.” And he added: According to the Politico report, “though he didn’t mention The Orange Baby Balloon, McConnell’s remarks underscore that he could be a foil to the incoming administration on national security issues next year when he leaves leadership.”

I had detested Mitch McConnell until the riot. But the things he said and did from that point on have changed my mind. He was not afraid to speak out and speak up. He was obviously disgusted with leadership. That opened my eyes. And although he did not speak out when the House submitted the impeachment request to the Senate and they had to read the information, and decide yes or no, he should be impeached, it seems Mitch was doing things in the background. He was also CYA but that’s not surprising. Everyone does it.

I think DonOld was almost afraid of Mitch. They had been working in sync for years but when Mitch slapped him down (even though the Senate didn’t actually impeach him), it must have been really, REALLY surprising for him “to turn on the Orangutan” when Mitch had been a solid Republican Congressperson for so many years and into the DonOld years. I bet it was a surprise to have Mitch “Grim Reaper” McConnell bite the hand that fed (past tense) him, at least for a little while. Having Mitch against him is NOT a good thing. Too bad The Confused Carrot didn’t learn from this. But then, he never learns. (Please understand that I do not *like* nor *love* Mitch now but he’s shown cojones to go AGAINST The Mango Mandarin.)

  1. Sorry, but regardless of what CHICKENSHIT MITCH has said about DON THE CON & J6…. all that matters is that he was too much of a COWARD TO VOTE YES ON IMPEACHMENT. That makes CHICKENSHIT MITCH AS MUCH OF A TRAITOR TO THE CONSTITUTION & this country as DON THE CON, CONVICTED FELON & RAPIST & ANY OF THE J6 TRAITORS.

    • Absolutely! He submarined Obama’s appointment in the early part of the year saying it was an election year…then put a brain dead cult member on the court after the vote had started. I see NOTHING HE DESERVES BUT A CIGARETTE AND A BLINDFOLD. It also left Garland around to mamby pamby around and let Trump walk on the violent insurrection. Ready…Aim…Fire. That would at least take one nazi lover down. May he fall and break his goddamn neck. The damage he has done will alter our history FOREVER!!!!!!! It’s incalculable.

  2. Now that he is no longer seeking re-election and no longer the Senate Majority Leader. he has felt a sudden surge of courage to confront Trump. He, as Majority Leader, could have helped remove Trump from office on two occasions and instead chose party over principle, political survival over statesmanship and country. He hoped the country would oust Trump and spare the Senate from doing its duty. He is beyond redemption, an American Quisling who felt no moral constraints in keeping Trump in office. Let us hear no more of him and let him slink into the dustbin of history.

    • Just a reminder, but that “could have helped remove Trump from office” would likely have required much more than Mitch could’ve managed to pull off. When the full Senate votes on impeachment, it takes a full two-thirds to actually remove the person from their office. Not “almost two-thirds” and certainly not “simple majority” but a FULL two-thirds. (With 100 Senators, that means 67–not 51, not 60, not 66 but 67.)

In Trump’s first impeachment, Trump faced TWO charges: Abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. On that first charge, he was found guilty by 48 senators with 52 voting not guilty (you’ll note that 48 < 67) and on the second charge, he was found guilty by 47 senators with 53 voting not guilty (you'll note that 47 < 67). In both cases, McConnell would have had to sway–somehow–some TWENTY GOP Senators.

Trump's second impeachment didn't actually occur until after he left office. You can argue that McConnell misread the proverbial tea leaves and actually did not expect Trump would make another run for the GOP nomination in 2024 but Trump was already out of office when the second vote was taken so the only REAL change that would've happened if McConnell could've persuaded another 10 GOPers to vote guilty would be that Trump would be barred from ever running for any federal elective office again; only 7 GOPers voted to find Trump guilty of "incitement of insurrection" and, of those, currently only 3 are still serving (Cassidy of Louisiana, Murkowski of Alaska and Collins of Maine; Murkowski survived an electoral challenge in 2022 against another Republican who was endorsed by Trump and the Alaska GOP while both Cassidy and Collins are "safe" until 2026). Now, MAYBE, if the impeachment vote had happened prior to January 20, 2021 (the Senate didn't even receive the Articles of Impeachment until January 25), more GOPers might have given Trump the middle finger and barred him but we'll never know that. (Maybe the bulk of GOP Senators felt that, since Trump was no longer in the White House, he shouldn't have been impeached but, again, the votes are simply guilty/not guilty with no kind of nuance or explanation given.)

  3. “McConnell would have had to sway–somehow–some TWENTY GOP Senators … ”
McConnell’s job as majority leader was and had always been to sway large numbers of GOP senators. He was pretty damn good at it.

It was McConnell himself who pushed for the delay of the second impeachment trial until Trump was out of office. He argued that because the Senate was in pro forma sessions until January 19, it could not take on any business without the unanimous consent of its members. It could easily have been argued the other way, as the Democrats did. But no.

I believe McConnell’s views about Trump now, and probably since J6, are sincere, so I’ll give you that Susan. But my wide angle view of the whole story can be summed up in one short phrase: “Too little, too late.” I’m glad McConnell voted against Hegseth, but even that didn’t matter, as he has very little power at this point and as close as the margin is, his vote still didn’t affect the result.

I have long been guided by the belief that actions speak louder than words. More so than ever in the current political situation, when the Republicans’ m.o. is bullshit and bluster. We need leaders who stand up for their beliefs and know how to get results. It is still possible, because this Trump maladministration is rapidly losing credibility even with many who voted for the SOB, the margins in both Senate and House are workable, and their power is mainly what the opposition allows them to have. But it’s going to take real leadership and real opposition. The consequences are literally a matter of life and death for this country.

    • Definitely… the Republicans’ m.o. is bullshit and bluster, with an even larger portion of CORRUPTION… & it has been for decades. Trump was a Democrat most of his life, but switched to the GOP to run for office because he knew the Democrats would never vote for a PIECE OF SHIT like him. He needed a party who not only would believe his BULLSHIT & LIES, BUT WAS ALSO AS CORRUPT AS HE IS.

  4. Everyone deserves credit for anything good that they do or say – even if it’s small and even if it’s late. This certainly isn’t enough to redeem him, but he does deserve credit for it.

There used to be a joke about a millionaire (yes, it’s old, today it would be a billionaire) who tried to convince Saint Peter that he should be allowed into heaven.. Peter pressed him for anything good he had ever done, and all he could come up with was that he had given a dollar to a beggar once, and another dollar to a charity once. Peter asked God for advice and was told “Give him back his two dollars and tell him to go to hell.”

You’ll note that even God gave this dude credit for his two dollars.

    • Nope… sorry. Doing something bordering on the right thing, but which doesn’t actually solve the problems created by his lifetime of CORRUPTION doesn’t get credit retroactively. CHICKENSHIT MITCH still deserves to go to HELL & definitely belongs there with the other DEMONS FROM HELL.
