Florida Govt. Joins the Trump Cult With Proposed Legal Fund

There are cults, and then there’s Trump’s Cult. Granted, there are residents of the Sunshine State who don’t want anything to do with Trump/MAGA but the fact is the state is under solid GOP political control. And the politicians running Florida want to help Trump pay his legal bills. I kid you not. Now, there are cults and there are cults but Trump’s MAGA Cult is proving to be in a league of its own.

There’s an article in Bloomberg about a bill in the works in Florida to help poor little Donald “I’m really, really rich” Trump (remember he used to say that?) pay his legal bills:

State Senator Ileana Garcia, a Republican, has filed a proposal to create the “Freedom Fighters Fund,” which would provide financial support for Florida residents running for president who face legal action. Trump, who is seeking a second term, lives in the Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

In case you’re wondering the bill provides for a 5 million dollar donation to Trump.  How you may ask can a state do what some mega donor does and write that kind of check to a politician? Well hell, SCOTUS has already ruled that corporations are people! I’m sure Chief Justice Roberts meant to add that states are too. (At least as long as it’s all between/for Republicans of course) You also might have noticed that the legislation doesn’t actually have Donald Trump’s name in it. The grift is titled the “Freedom Fighter’s Fund.” Somehow I doubt that if say Charlie Crist were to make a last minute entry into the Democratic primary he could tap into the fund for the legal expenses he’d incur trying to get ballot access.

The article makes a point of talking about how there are multiple committees the legislation must clear, the “hurdles” it will face to become law. Oh please! This will sail right through and DeSantis will make a pilgrimage to Mar A Lago to kneel down before Trump to sign it! Ron isn’t all that popular in Florida these days so there’s that. However the legislature went to great lengths passing all kinds of draconian legislation DeSantis demanded to appeal to MAGAs to set him up for his campaign. So there’s a LOT of elected and appointed Republicans in Florida fearing the “Wrath of Trump.” Who want to appease the Mango Messiah. For example:

“If we can help and support a Florida candidate for the White House, that’s just good from a dollars and cents perspective,” said Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis in an emailed statement supporting the bill.

Patronis, a former lawmaker who has served as Florida’s CFO since 2017, has led some of the state’s biggest attacks on finance, including cutting BlackRock Inc. out of some state funds because of its support for investments that consider a company’s environmental, social and corporate governance policies. He endorsed Trump less than an hour after DeSantis dropped out.

Yep. There are lots of politicos in Florida who (as Trump sees things) “conspired” with DeSantis to take over control of MAGA from Trump. Instead of the god they claim to believe them turning them into ash heaps with bolts of lightening Old Testament style, they are afraid of being turned into itty-bitty bits of mauled MAGA Meat by Trump social media posts. 5 million? How much do you want to bet Trump doesn’t soon (if he hasn’t already) start working them (by working I mean threatening) to UP that amount? I can hear them now: “Did we say 5 million? Oh sir, our lord and master that was a typo! Some idiot left of the zero. It was supposed to be 50 million!  For a start. Of course. If you need more just let us know.”

As it stands, the money is supposed to come from the state’s public campaigns matching fund. It would, according to Patronis be replenished “someday’ from voluntary donations via driver’s license registrations. Now there’s an interesting question I hope will get some scrutiny.  I’m willing to bet the legislation will be awfully vague on just when that replenishment will take place. The 12th of Never?” After Trump holds an “Infrastructure Week” that actually gets some work on roads and bridges done? After Trump release his “best Healthcare in the world that’s totally better AND way cheaper than Obamacare” proposal? (feel free to add your own never will happen suggestions folks)

Now that I think about it when the money in the state coffers will be replenished from the voluntary public campaign fund won’t be the only detail that’s vague. If I had to bet the legislation will include “expansion language” that sets 5 million as a starting point, allowing for “additional contributions as deemed warranted.”

This whole thing is sick. Florida is one of the small number of states I’ve never set foot in. Hell, I’ve even spent time in Alaska but my travels have never taken me to Florida. I’ve wanted to visit the Everglades since I was young. And there are some other places, not just some golf courses I’d like to see there as well. Not anymore. Yes, there are good and decent people in that state. But they have no control and conservatives have made it suck so badly there is nothing worth braving that political and cultural environment that’s worth risking exposure to the place.

Now that DeSantis is back there, can they maybe hold a big Trump Rally and with most of the Florida VIP MAGAs including Trump himself, as well as many/most of the regular non-Florida MAGA characters like including MTG, Cruz, Bobo etc. all gathered there fire up the Jewish Space Lasers and cut the State off of the land mass of the rest of the lower 48?  Sort of doing an American version of the Canadian “casting adrift?” (putting someone on a sliver of ice and sawing it loose to drift way)
